Credit funds get boost from JP Morgan loss: survey

LONDON (Reuters) - The type of hedge funds that bet against JP Morgan and made money from its $5.8 billion "London Whale" trading loss has risen to the top of investors' buying lists for the coming quarter, a survey showed.

Of 157 investors polled across the globe, 53 percent said they planned to allocate cash to credit relative value funds in the coming quarter, according to Credit Suisse's mid-year Hedge Fund Investor Survey.

This hedge fund strategy seeks to profit from dislocations in fixed income markets, and many have performed well this year after taking advantage of the U.S. bank's losing position in credit derivatives.

Robert Leonard, global head of Capital Services at Credit Suisse, said news of the funds' gains from the JP Morgan loss probably boosted the appeal of the strategy. Investors are also demanding trading styles that are less exposed to the economic headwinds causing havoc elsewhere.

"Investors have got plenty of volatility in their book right now. They are looking for strategies that are less volatile, and I think credit is one of those," he told Reuters.

The credit relative value fund strategy was the fifth most popular when Credit Suisse conducted an earlier survey, before JP Morgan's loss came to light.

By comparison, 50 percent of the investors said they planned to increase their allocation to global macro funds, which were the most sought type of fund at the start of the year, the survey showed.

In May, JP Morgan reported a $2 billion trading loss, which then swelled to $5.8 billion, after the bank's Chief Investment Office made bets now known as "the London Whale trades" on derivatives linked to corporate debt.

The loss proved an embarrassment for the bank and led to criticism of boss Jamie Dimon. The outsized bets also distorted the price of certain credit derivatives and offered shrewd hedge funds a chance to profit when the bank was eventually forced to sell.

According to Hedge Fund Research, the HFRI Relative Value (Total) Index was up 4.18 percent to mid-July, more than double the 1.87 percent average hedge fund gain.

Some individual credit relative value funds have performed even better.

BlueMountain, the firm co-founded by Andrew Feldstein, has seen its Credit Alternatives Fund rise by more than 10 percent by mid-July, while Brevan Howard's Credit Catalysts Fund was up more than 7 percent, private investor data shows.

Some funds such as Boaz Weinstein's Saba Capital have since exited their bets against JP Morgan, but other managers still remain confident dislocations elsewhere in credit markets will offer new opportunities, fund sources said.

Meanwhile, the results of the Credit Suisse survey may worry managers of equity long-short funds.

Yet to rebound from a poor 2011, the strategy is set to suffer the most withdrawals in the coming quarter as 26 percent of investors indicated that they planned to cut exposure.

"The good news is we haven't see a big exodus from the space ... But I do think in the second half of the year, that is going to be a different story. It's going to be a time when a lot of investors draw conclusions based on how their managers perform," Leonard said.

More than four-fifths of investors polled expect to make allocations to hedge funds in the coming quarter, and 63 percent indicated that they had made allocations in the past quarter, the survey found.

Fuel Fix ? Valero may split off retail operations

San Antonio-based refiner Valero Energy Corp.?s announcement that its net income rose almost 12 percent in the second quarter came with a surprise: It may split its retail business from the rest of the company.

Valero said it is reviewing several ways to separate its retail operations, including a distribution to shareholders, the company said.

A separation of Valero?s retail business ?will create operational flexibility within the businesses and unlock value for our shareholders,? CEO Bill Klesse said in a statement. ?As independent companies, both retail and the remaining business will be better-positioned to focus on their industry-specific strategies.?

Valero spokesman Bill Day said a separation of Valero?s retail business to shareholders would offer tax advantages to Valero and to shareholders. In a split, the retail operations would be a company that would operate independently from Valero, but the stations would retain the Valero brand, he said.

?That doesn?t mean we?re ruling out a sale,? Day said. ?We?re looking at the options that would be best for shareholders.?

The company has hired Credit Suisse Securities LLC to advise it on the possible split.

Valero?s share?s rose more than 7 percent on the news to trade at $28 a share in midmorning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Valero said its net income rose in the quarter ended June 30 to $830 million, or $1.50 a share, compared with net income of $743 million, or $1.31 a share, for the year-earlier period.

The showing exceeded analysts? expectations, as polled by Bloomberg, that Valero would earn $1.43 a share.
Valero?s retail segment reported record high quarterly operating income of $172 million in the second quarter compared with $135 million of operating income for the year-earlier period.

The increase in operating income was mainly due to higher fuel margins and volumes in U.S. retail, Valero said.
Valero?s retail stores are in the United States and Canada.

What is Anaphora? A Definition?

Anaphora is the Greek term used to describe the repetition of the same word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses or sentences.

Anaphora, like many other rhetorical techniques, is commonly used in literature as well as in speeches. From literature, consider the opening words from Charles Dickens? Tale of Two Cities:

It was the best of times,
it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom,
it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief,
it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of Light,
it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope,
it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us,
we had nothing before us,
we were all going direct to Heaven,
we were all going direct the other way ?

Dickens? use of anaphora (combined with skillful use of contrast) helps make this passage one of the most famous openings in all of literature. He uses anaphora three times:

• 10 clauses beginning with ?it was the?
• 2 clauses beginning with ?we had?
• 2 clauses beginning with ?we were all going direct?

Anaphora in ?I Have a Dream? and ?We Shall Fight?

In August, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave us one of the richest speech examples for anaphora. This includes ?I have a dream ?? and many other repetition-laden passages, including:

Now is the time?to?make real the promises of democracy.
Now is the time?to?rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.
Now is the time?to?lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
Now is the time?to?make justice a reality for all of God?s children.

In all, King?s speech contains eight examples of anaphora. For more examples, see the?Six Minutes?Speech Analysis of ?I Have a Dream?.

Another famous anaphora passage was delivered in the midst of World War II by?Winston Churchill in the House of Commons, June 4, 1940:

We shall go on to the end,
we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,
we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,

Other Anaphora Examples

While anaphora was used by King and Churchill in highly emotional passages, it doesn?t always need to be used in this way.

In the three examples below, anaphora is used more for its emphatic and unifying characteristics. As well, note that the second and third examples involve the repetition at the beginning of phrases (as opposed to the beginning of sentences):

A Guide for Using Anaphora in Your Speeches

The examples above highlight how anaphora helps create more emotional, more powerful, more quotable, and more memorable passages.?But let?s be honest. We are rarely called to address a national or global audience on historic occasions.

So, in a ?normal? speech, can you benefit by using anaphora too? Yes, absolutely! You can use anaphora in the classroom, the boardroom, or the ballroom.

Keep these guidelines in mind when stitching anaphora into your speeches.

?Use anaphora strategically to highlight a passage which is central to your core message.?

Guideline 1: Don?t overdo it.

Contrary to the example from ?I have a dream?, it may be best to use anaphora sparingly within a speech. If you use it over and over again in every paragraph, its impact may be reduced. In most speeches, once or twice is probably enough.

Instead, use anaphora?strategically to highlight a passage which is central to your core message. There?s no rule that says where this should be, but opening or closing a speech with anaphora is common.

Guideline 2: Choose simple, yet important words to repeat.

In nearly every example in this article, the speaker chose to repeat common, one-syllable words. Simple language is always a good choice, but this is especially so for repeated words.

But ?simple? doesn?t mean the words are negligible. Consider:

• King: ?Now is the time ?? and ?I have a dream ??
• Churchill: ?We shall fight ??
• Pope John Paul II: ?I hope that ?? (example below)

In each case, the repeated words echo key themes of the speech. King was sharing his dream and believed that the time had come for action. Churchill served notice that Britain was ready to fight. Pope John Paul II expressed hope for the future.

Guideline #3: Emphasize your delivery.

When speech examples are written out (as in this article), the anaphora is obvious. In a spoken speech, however, your audience doesn?t have this luxury. To achieve maximum effect, be sure to emphasize the repetitive words in your delivery. Enunciate clearly. Pause appropriately. Add vocal power if it makes sense to do so.

Guideline #4: Consider combining anaphora with other rhetorical devices.

To craft a really memorable passage, try weaving anaphora with another rhetorical device, such as:

• the rule of three
• epistrophe
• climax

Rule of Three
When you combine anaphora with the rule of three, the result is strong unity between the three statements. For example, consider these three contemporary speech examples:

Steve Jobs, Stanford Commencement Speech, June 12, 2005:

My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor?s code for prepare to die.

Epistrophe
The mirror of anaphora, epistrophe is repetition at the end of consecutive clauses or sentences. With anaphora and epistrophe combined, you get sentences which begin and end with the same words. This focuses the attention on the connecting words in the middle, and magnifies the similarities or differences. For example:

Lyndon B. Johnson, March 15, 1965:

There is no?Negro?problem.
There is no?Southern?problem.
There is no?Northern?problem.
There is only an American?problem.

Climax
When successive sentences increase in scope, this is known as climax. Note the amplification in the passage below from Pope John Paul II as he transitions from individual (1 and 2) to country (3 and 4) to global community (5).

At the close of this address, I wish to express once more before all the high representatives of the States who are present a word of esteem and deep love for all the peoples, all the nations of the earth, for all human communities. Each one has its own history and culture.

U.S. probes Enbridge Wisconsin oil pipe spill; line still shut

WASHINGTON/CALGARY (Reuters) - The U.S. pipeline safety agency launched an investigation on Saturday into an oil spill in Wisconsin on Enbridge Inc's network that briefly shut much of the company's pipeline system feeding Canadian crude to the U.S. Midwest.

Enbridge's 318,000 barrel per day Line 14 pipeline, which carries light sweet Canadian crude to Chicago-area refineries, was shut on Friday after an estimated 1,200 barrels of oil were leaked, and the Canadian company said on Saturday it did not have a restart time for the pipeline yet.

Two pipelines that had also been shut, the 400,000 bpd Line 61 and the 670,000 bpd Line 6A, had been returned to service on Saturday following the spill, however.

Enbridge said 180,000 bpd Line 13, which carries diluent from Chicago to Edmonton, Alberta, was also shuttered and would be restarted once it was confirmed it had not been impacted by the release.

The cause of the spill, which occurred almost two years to the day after another major spill in Michigan on a different section of the system, had yet to be determined but repairs on Line 14 -- part of the Lakehead pipeline system -- were expected to begin later in the day.

Enbridge Energy Partners said on Friday there was not yet a time frame for when flows would resume, and the cause of the spill had not yet been determined.

"(The U.S. Transportation Department's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) is investigating the cause of the Enbridge crude oil pipeline failure in Wisconsin," spokesman Damon Hill said in an email, adding that an inspector had been sent to the location of the pipeline failure.

Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were also on sight, Enbridge said. Line 14 is one of four lines that ship mainly Canadian crude via Lakehead, a 2.5 million bpd network that is the principal route for Canadian exports.

PREVIOUS SPILLS

The news will not help Enbridge build public trust in its network, which has come under scrutiny following several high-profile incidents, including a spill in Alberta last month and the massive leak in Michigan two years ago.

Just weeks ago, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board delivered a scathing report of Enbridge's handling of the July 2010 rupture of its Line 6B near Marshall, Michigan, which led to more than 20,000 barrels of crude leaking into the Kalamazoo River.

The NTSB said it found a complete breakdown of company safety measures, and that Enbridge employees performed like "Keystone Kops" trying to contain it. The rupture went undetected for 17 hours.

U.S. pipeline regulators fined it $3.7 million for the spill, their largest ever penalty.

The incidents have caused furor just as the company seeks approval for its C$6 billion Northern Gateway pipeline to Canada's West Coast from Alberta amid staunch opposition from environmental groups and native communities that warn against oil spills on land and in coastal waters.

Enbridge said Line 14 was a 24-inch diameter pipe that was installed in 1998, making it a relatively new line.

In most cases, smaller pipeline leaks can be repaired quickly allowing operations to resume pumping, although regulators may require significant work if they find any cause for alarm. Following the leak two years ago, the line was shut for over two months.

No injury was reported on Friday at the line, which is near Grand Marsh, Wisconsin, Enbridge said.

US men's basketball team to play Argentina, Spain

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Forever in the Dream Team's shadow, the U.S. Olympic basketball team is now walking in its footsteps.

The Americans are back in Barcelona, site of their greatest glory, the scene of the best basketball ever played, as they finish their preparations for London.

Twenty years after their predecessors stormed their way to gold here, the Americans will see one of the Dream Team's lasting legacies: the strength of international programs that rose in part because of the interest it created.

The U.S. will play exhibition games against Argentina and Spain, teams with veterans old enough to remember seeing Magic and Bird play. The Americans beat both en route to the gold medal four years ago, holding off the Spaniards in a gold-medal game thriller.

Both countries have enjoyed lengthy stays near the top of international basketball, each winning a major title in the past decade, and should provide quality tests for a U.S. team that still has some improving to do.

"It seems like each game the competition progresses a little bit more," U.S. guard Chris Paul said. "We've had three great games so far, but we have to keep getting better because we know when we get there and play against Argentina and Spain, they're going to be great games."

The Americans had an easy one Thursday, beating Britain 118-78 in Manchester, England. The U.S. carved up a defenseless opponent, shooting 60 percent, collecting 39 assists on 47 baskets, and leading by as much as 47 points.

But the British are just getting going in basketball, where the sport is largely ignored. The Americans know to expect better in their upcoming games at Palau Sant Jordi.

Pau Gasol's first contact with the NBA game came as a 12-year-old boy watching the Dream Team on TV in his Northern Spain home. He's gone on to become one of the NBA's best big men and was the MVP of the 2006 world basketball championship, when Spain won the gold medal.

Manu Ginobili and Luis Scola both starred in Europe and became international stalwarts before taking their pro careers to the NBA, and were the driving forces behind an Argentina squad that won the 2004 Olympic gold medal and the silver in the 2002 world championships.

The U.S. will play Argentina on Sunday and Spain on Tuesday. Those games should more resemble the Americans' 80-69 victory over Brazil than the romps over the Dominican Republic and Britain.

"Yeah, well we had a big test against Brazil, a team that has big guys. Argentina will definitely be another test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said. "Then of course everybody wants to see the Spain matchup, so we're getting prepared for that."

Anthony scored 19 points Thursday, coming off the bench along with Paul for the first time in a sign that coach Mike Krzyzewski still is doing tinkering at a time when his 2008 team was already set.

The Americans essentially had the same starting lineup from the start of the 2007 Olympic qualifying tournament right through the end of the Olympics: LeBron James, Anthony, Dwight Howard, Jason Kidd and Kobe Bryant. Kidd retired from international play, Howard is injured, and Kevin Durant has become an international force worthy of being a starter.

James and Bryant retain their spots and Tyson Chandler has become the starting center. Krzyzewski could bounce between Anthony and Durant at one forward spot, and Paul and Deron Williams, who also scored 19 on Thursday, at point guard.

"I don't necessarily think there is any permanence to our starting lineup," Krzyzewski said. "You basically have a group, a core group, of veterans, mostly from the Beijing Olympics that I think do need to be the core of this team because they're older, they've been through the Olympics. Durant, talent-wise, is right there with any of them. So, some combination of the six or seven of those guys will start.

"We've talked about it. They're fine with it. It has to start there. I'm not sure who will start against Argentina. I don't think it really makes a difference. Like this morning, I just talked to them, 'What if we did this' and they said, 'Fine. Whatever you want to do.' It will be within that realm of seven players with Tyson at the center spot."

The game against Spain is the more anticipated one and should provide the U.S. with the bigger challenge. The Americans edged the Spanish in an exhibition game in Madrid before the 2010 worlds, but both teams played that summer without key players from the Americans' 118-107 victory on the last day of the Beijing Games.

"They are a great team," James said. "They've been together for a long time. They have a great chemistry, and they have great inside-outside depth and we look forward to playing against them."

With Pau Gasol and younger brother Marc, and NBA All-Star this season, and nationalized Spanish player Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Spain is powerful inside. The Americans don't have much size and don't seem interested in using what they do have, Krzyzewski using some lineups in which the 6-foot-9 Durant is his tallest player.

If the size factor really is a threat to their hopes, the Americans will know it by the time they leave here a day before the opening ceremonies next week.

"I mean, we definitely have weaknesses that teams can take advantage of, and I think this trip to Barcelona is going to be very big for us because you are playing Argentina and Spain," Bryant said. "So, we'll get a good look at that."

I don't know about you but I have all those somewhat platonic ideals about what a real summer should be like. So what constitutes the 'summerness' of a particular summer? Well let's start with the bit where I complain - it involves stretches of continuously warm temperatures and a lack of rain. So we're definitely not doing well so far. If I get caught in torrential rain one more time this week I'll bite the bullet and get my wax jacket re-waxed.?
But now that I have, once again, complained about the weather, let's talk about the bits that make me feel like I'm experiencing an actual summer.
Another part of my summer-universal involves family barbecues. Not the ones where you sit down with your parents and that's it, but I mean the big family gatherings where you see people you haven't seen well...since last year's barbecue.
The funny thing is I??have one memory of my extended family doing that at some point and I can't have been older than 12 or so. I'm sure there were more occasions but the fact that I don't really have any distinct memories of big family gatherings also suggests that we didn't really have that many.
Moving abroad right after finishing high school probably didn't really help either.


So, why am I actually telling you all of this??
My parents moved back to their hometown. A town in (sorry...) the middle of nowhere and I must admit most of my memories from when I was younger mostly involve either fog and rain in the fall or a distinct drop in temperature while driving there in the summer.?




I also have memories of eating what felt like kilos upon kilos of blackberries on my grandma's back porch, drinking fresh carrot juice at my other grandma's house, my aunts amazing Black Forest Gateau and walking across the heath to go to this super cute restaurant. But in case you haven't noticed all the positive memories involve food and all the negative things involve things I have on my personal list of 'things I like to complain about'. So I obviously kept remembering all the negative things and forgetting about the good things.
Anyhow, I'm finally getting to the end of this story - the house that was a building-site for pretty much the entirety of the last 6 month is finally more or less habitable (though my mum would probably beg to differ) so my parents decided to throw a housewarming party. And the entire family came. And my parents friends from high school, and my mum's friends from Stuttgart.




And amidst all the buzz about the food (you gotta love a good potluck), the gorgeous hardwood floors, the kitchen that is simply amazing, and the views of the town castle and whatnot I kept thinking that it had been too long and that I really hope my parents throw another big party like this some time really soon.


And do you want to know the best thing? I even managed to go swimming in an outdoor-pool for the first time this year because I was finally near one when it was warm enough (so apparently it's not always rainy and foggy at the new place...).


I'll be back in the next few days with a recipe for pickled watermelon rinds. Because you can never have enough watermelon recipes and also because I was instructed by my aunt to finally post the recipe :)

Word-Of-Mouth Recommendations Platform Tout?d Closes $1.4 Million Seed Round

Tout'd, a New York-based startup that describes itself as a "digital word-of-mouth social media platform and referral engine," today announced that it has closed a $1.4 million seed round led by Warner Hill Angels. This round also included participation by the service's founders and 25 third-party investors. The company says that it plans to use this money to "accelerate growth, enhance the user experience and further develop the platform interface and functionality." The service was founded by Wall Street veterans Rob Morelli, Saro Cutri, and 2007 TechStars alumnus Arron Kallenberg.

More US homes facing foreclosure risk in June

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Banks are increasingly placing homes with unpaid mortgages on a countdown that could deliver a swell of new foreclosed properties onto the market by early next year, potentially weighing further on home values.

June provided the latest evidence of this trend, as the number of U.S. homes entering the foreclosure process for the first time increased on an annual basis for the second month in a row, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

California in particular saw a big spike in foreclosure starts, or homes placed on the foreclosure path for the first time. They increased 18 percent versus June last year, the firm said.

The increase in foreclosure starts comes as banks make up for time lost last year as the mortgage-lending industry grappled with allegations that it had processed foreclosures without verifying documents.

The nation's biggest mortgage lenders reached a $25 billion settlement in February with state officials. And that's cleared the way for banks to address their backlog of unpaid mortgages.

Lenders initiated foreclosure on 12 percent of the loans behind in payment in June ? the highest level since the first half of 2009, according to Fitch Ratings.

"These properties that are starting the foreclosure process are mostly homeowners who likely have been missing their payments for a year or more and just now are officially starting the foreclosure process," said Daren Blomquist, a vice president at RealtyTrac.

That means the latest crop of homes entering the foreclosure process does not signal that there is a fresh wave of homeowners in distress and missing payments.

Still, the increase in foreclosure starts sets the stage for a potential increase in homes sold at a discount via short sale, when the lender agrees to accept less than what is owed on the seller's mortgage. Others could end up taken back by banks and placed on the market also at a sharp discount.

Either way, short of homeowners obtaining loan modifications or otherwise arranging to exit the foreclosure process, many of these properties could end up adding to the inventory of foreclosed homes on the market, dragging down the values of nearby homes.

Those homes may not hit the market for many months, however.

In the second quarter, it took an average of 378 days for a U.S. home to complete the foreclosure process, or the point when a bank takes over the property, RealtyTrac said. That's up from an average of 370 days in the first three months of the year and a record going back to the first quarter of 2007, the firm said.

In New York, it took an average of 1,001 days for the foreclosure process to run its course in the second quarter, down from 1,056 days in the first quarter.

Of the homes that entered the foreclosure process in June, those that end up as bank-owned properties would likely hit the market a year from now, Blomquist said.

"However, if they take the short sale route, it may be sooner," he said.

Short sales take, on average, 319 days to sell from the time they enter foreclosure.

A stronger housing market could mitigate the impact of future foreclosures on home prices, and home sales are expected to end up ahead of last year. But many economists still say the market is years away from a full recovery.

There are some 3 million U.S. homes behind on their mortgages, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

An additional 629,000 homes were on banks' books as of June, but not yet sold. That translates into a 15-month supply, at the current pace of sales, according to RealtyTrac.

And nearly 13 million home loans are underwater, or owing more than the house is worth. Those properties could be at higher risk for entering the foreclosure process.

Even so, the backlog in foreclosures that banks are still dealing with has slowed the pace of home repossessions.

RealtyTrac forecasts some 700,000 homes will be repossessed by lenders this year, down from about 1 million last year.
