This USB-powered gadget stinks, but it in a good way
Most of us are used to hearing pleasant bleeps and bloops to inform us of notifications from social networking and instant messaging clients, but London's Mint Digital thinks that smells may be a better way to go. The company's new USB-powered device called Olly allows you to receive scent prompts instead of of visual or audio notifications.
Olly works by letting the user place a source of scent ? such as potpourri or oil ? on a slide-out tray located on the back. Once the gadget is plugged into the USB port of your computer, you can set it to activate when certain web-based events occur, such as a reply on Twitter or a canLike on Facebook. Then, when the criteria are met, Olly will fill your room with the desired smell.
Each Olly can only support one type of odor, though you can plug as many in as you desire. If you have a USB hub, you could conceivably have a half dozen different scents for various types of notifications, making your home or office a fragrant place to be. Its creators haven't put the Olly into mass-market production yet, but if you have your DIY hat on and 3D printer handy, you can keep an eye on the official instructions page where detailed build directions will be released in the coming days.
