Susan asks?
I am writing a cover letter for my resume. The ad online does not give a contact name?
So instead of Dear So and so? what should I write? To whom this may concern sounds like a complaint letter. It does not say it?s to the Human Resources Dept either? it just gives an email address. It REQUIRES a cover letter.
bobg answers:
If the email address appears to be a person?s name, you can search for it online and possibly find out their full name and then address it to them. If it?s the name of a department such as ?administration@isp.com? then you could say Dear Administration Department. Or, you could simply write Dear Employer if you like.
Most employers won?t expect you to figure out the name of the person you?re sending it to, if they don?t provide that information. It?s not normally a test of your investigative skills.
Good luck!

Maria asks?
Send email to check if cover letter, resume and references where received?
Is this okay and if so, what is the proper way to write such an email? I emailed this business my cover letter, resume and references for an open position on 9/19.
It should say, were received, NOT WHERE.
bobg answers:
It is a quite responsible thing to do ?and you should.
Most employers should recognize that you are mature and take responsibility by such a move.
There is nothing wrong with inquiring if these were received. A lost of companies would have sent you verification.
Sharon asks?
What is the proper procedure for sending a cover letter & resume via email when applying for a job?
If no specific instructions are given, just an email address, do you place the cover letter in the body of the email and attach the r?sum?, or do you attach both documents, and, if so, what message do you write in the body of the email instead?
Also, if the cover letter is used as the content of the email, no additional message is needed right? Like a preface saying the following is my application for x, instead you just start off with the address info etc. in the top left corner?
Thanks!!!
bobg answers:
I usually place my cover letter in the body of the email, no additional message is needed, as you will be stating the purpose of your email in the cover letter and in the subject line. Remember, this is the first thing they see. If you just write a note in the email, and attach the cover letter, they may not even read it. Also, if they gave no instructions, your subject line should read? Resume from Your Full Name for Job Opening position. If the add gave the position a certain number or code, use that in the subject line as well. Resume from (you) for (job) position xx33dd. Full example is Resume from John Doe for Customer Service position 12345, or John Doe Resume for Customer Service position.
