Iran leader warns against public political clashes

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's supreme leader warned government officials and politicians Wednesday against turning their disputes into a public discussion, calling it "treason" against the state.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's comments were a direct jab at embattled President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who publicly lambasted Iran's judiciary chief last week for rejecting his request to visit Evin prison.

Ahmadinejad accused the judiciary of "unconstitutional" behavior, claiming that as Iran's president he did not need permission to visit the prison. Judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani fired back, saying Ahmadinejad does not understand his constitutional powers.

Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters in Iran, said that provoking political differences ahead of presidential elections, scheduled for June 14, is "treason."

"One of the harmful cases is differences among authorities, and worse than that is taking it to the public. I warn the officials and the heads of branches (of power) to be careful and not take their differences to the people," Khamenei said in a speech broadcast on state TV Wednesday.

Larijani wrote a confidential letter to Ahmadinejad earlier this month rejecting the president's demand to visit Evin where his top press adviser Ali Akbar Javanfekr is being held. Javanfekr was jailed last month after being convicted of publishing material deemed insulting to Khamenei.

But the president revealed the contents of the note and publicly criticized Larijani for barring him from visiting Evin.

Iran's State Prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi said the judiciary rejected Ahmadinejad's request because the president's planned visit appeared to be politically motivated. Ejehi asked why the president never asked to visit Evin during his seven years as president but wants to go there now that his close aide is behind bars.

Ahmadinejad originally had the backing of the clerics, but the support broke down over his perceived challenge to the authority of Khamenei last year. Since then, Ahmadinejad has rapidly lost his political clout.

Ahmadinejad and Iran's powerful clerics have long had their differences, and the conflict has intensified ahead of next year's presidential elections. Ahmadinejad cannot run for another term but wants to influence the race to pick his successor. In parliamentary elections earlier this year, his supporters were soundly defeated.

"The recent exchange of letters and their contents were not important at all but these disputes should not be made public as it gives ammunition to foreign media and enemies to create controversy," Khamenei said. "From today to election day, whoever willfully takes disputes to the people and uses their sentiments to provoke differences has definitely committed treason against the state."

Khamenei's remarks likely reflect hopes for tension-free elections that would avoid a repeat of the political turmoil that followed the 2009 disputed presidential vote that brought charges of fraud and set off street demonstrations.

Iran's establishment is wary of public political clashes at a time of tightened Western sanctions that have squeezed Iran's economy.

In an indication of the sanctions' impact, the Central Bank of Iran banned all export of gold without its explicit approval to avoid a shortage of the precious metal.

Senior central bank official, Mohammad Reza Naderi was quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency on Wednesday as saying that the new restriction has been imposed because of currency fluctuations.

Iran's currency, the rial, lost about 50 percent of its value earlier this month. The currency's nosedive has been blamed on a combination of government mismanagement and the bite from tightened sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at producing a nuclear weapon.

Iran denies the charge, insisting its uranium enrichment program is only for peaceful purposes, such as fuel generation.

In 1997, Congress cracked down on a popular tax shelter that allowed rich people to take advantage of the exempt status of charities without actually giving away much money.

Individuals who had already set up these vehicles were allowed to keep them. That included Mitt Romney, then the chief executive officer of Bain Capital, who had just established such an arrangement in June 1996.

The charitable remainder unitrust, as it is known, is one of several strategies Romney has adopted over his career to reduce his tax bill. While Romney?s tax avoidance is legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become an issue in the campaign. President Barack Obama attacked him in their second debate for paying ?lower tax rates than somebody who makes a lot less.?

In this instance, Romney used the tax-exempt status of a charity -- the Mormon Church, according to a 2007 filing -- to defer taxes for more than 15 years. At the same time he is benefitting, the trust will probably leave the church with less than what current law requires, according to tax returns obtained by Bloomberg this month through a Freedom of Information Act request.

In general, charities don?t owe capital gains taxes when they sell assets for a profit. Trusts like Romney?s permit funders to benefit from that tax-free treatment, said Jonathan Blattmachr, a trusts and estates lawyer who set up hundreds of such vehicles in the 1990s.

Near Zero

?The main benefit from a charitable remainder trust is the renting from your favorite charity of its exemption from taxation,? Blattmachr said. Despite the name, giving a gift or getting a charitable deduction ?is just a throwaway,? he said. ?I used to structure them so the value dedicated to charity was as close to zero as possible without being zero.?

When individuals fund a charitable remainder unitrust, or ?CRUT,? they defer capital gains taxes on any profit from the sale of the assets, and receive a small upfront charitable deduction and a stream of yearly cash payments. Like an individual retirement account, the trust allows money to grow tax deferred, while like an annuity it also pays Romney a steady income. After the funder?s death, the trust?s remaining assets go to a designated charity.

Romney?s CRUT, which is only a small part of the $250 million that Romney?s campaign cites as his net worth, has been paying him 8 percent of its assets each year. As the Romneys have received these payments, the money that will potentially be left for charity has declined from at least $750,000 in 2001 to $421,203 at the end of 2011.

Tax Returns

The Romney campaign declined to answer written questions about the trust.

?The trust has operated in accordance with the law,? Michele Davis, a campaign spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.

Paul Comstock, a financial adviser to LDS Philanthropies, an arm of the Mormon Church, said that while he wasn?t familiar with the trust, Romney and his trustee might arrange to compensate the church for the dwindling amount with other gifts.

?It may be that they?ve made provisions for the charity someplace else that will make up for what this isn?t going to give them,? Comstock said.

Bloomberg News obtained the trust?s tax returns from 2007 to 2011 from the Internal Revenue Service. Romney hasn?t disclosed the trust?s tax returns and is under no legal obligation to do so. He did make some disclosures about the trust?s investments in Massachusetts filings from 2002 to 2007 and as a presidential candidate in the current campaign.

After Death

Funds held by Romney?s trust are scheduled to be distributed after the death of Romney and his wife to ?a charitable organization to be designated by Romney,? according to the 2007 filing, disclosing assets he held while governor of Massachusetts. ?In the absence of such a designation the funds will go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.?

Davis declined to comment on whether Romney has designated another charity since then.

Romney has been an active member of the church, which expects members to donate 10 percent of their income. Over the years, he has donated millions of dollars of stock in Bain-owned companies to the church, securities filings show.

The church recommends such trusts on its website as one of many options for donors.

?Probably one of the advantages of a charitable remainder trust is that it helps with capital gains tax,? said Carl McLelland, an attorney in the planned giving office for LDS Philanthropies.

Capital Gains

CRUTs were more common in the 1990s when capital gains rates were higher. In 1996, when Romney set up his trust in Massachusetts, the federal rate was 28 percent, compared with 15 percent today. At the time, a Massachusetts state resident who sold shares for a gain of $1 million could have faced a combined state and federal capital gains tax of as much as 40 percent, reducing his take to $600,000.

By contrast, if he contributed the stock to a CRUT, and it sold the shares, it typically wouldn?t owe any tax since it is a charitable trust. The CRUT could reinvest the $1 million and earn a return on the full amount.

?The power of this is the tax deferral,? said Jay A. Friedman, a partner at accounting firm Perelson Weiner LLP in New York. ?The money is all growing tax free and he only pays tax on what is distributed to him.?

Concerned that CRUTS weren?t sufficiently philanthropic, Congress mandated in July 1997 that the present value of what was projected to be left for charity must equal at least 10 percent of the initial contribution. Existing CRUTS weren?t affected by the new law.

Dwindling Principal

Romney?s trust was projected to leave to charity an amount with a present value of a little less than 8 percent of the initial contribution, according to an analysis by Friedman. Thus, the specifics of Romney?s trust wouldn?t have passed legal muster if it had been set up 13 months later, he said.

Because the trust?s investments have been earning a return far below its annual payouts to the Romneys, its principal has dwindled rapidly.

In 2001, five years after it was established, the trust had a value of between $750,000 and $1.25 million. Since then, it has pursued a conservative investment strategy -- regardless of the ups and downs of the stock market -- buying a mix of money- market funds, federally-backed bonds and federal bond funds. Since 2007, it has moved its assets entirely into cash. By 2011, its investments earned a return of $48, down from between $60,001 and $100,000 in 2001. It paid $36,696 to the Romneys in 2011.

Romneys Favored

The current investing strategy favors the Romneys over the charity because they get a guaranteed payout, said Michael Arlein, a trusts and estates lawyer at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP.

?The Romneys get theirs off the top and the charity gets what?s left,? he said. ?So by definition, if it?s not performing as well, the charity gets harmed more.?

The trustee for Romney?s CRUT is R. Bradford Malt, chairman of the law firm Ropes & Gray LLP, and manager for Romney?s various family trusts as well as his personal attorney. Ropes & Gray has also been for years the main outside counsel for Bain Capital.

If the CRUT maintains the same investing strategy, assets will continue to shrink, said Jerome M. Hesch, a tax and estate planning attorney at the law firm Carlton Fields. The trustee acted prudently in protecting against losses during a stock market decline, he said.

Nevertheless, ?what?s going to go to charity is probably close to nothing,? Hesch said.

Smart as a bird: Flying rescue robot will autonomously avoid obstacles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Cornell researchers have created an autonomous flying robot that is as smart as a bird when it comes to maneuvering around obstacles.

Able to guide itself through forests, tunnels or damaged buildings, the machine could have tremendous value in search-and-rescue operations. Small flying machines are already common, and GPS technology provides guidance. Now, Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science, and his team are tackling the hard part: how to keep the vehicle from slamming into walls and tree branches. Human controllers can't always react swiftly enough, and radio signals may not reach everywhere the robot goes.

The test vehicle is a quadrotor, a commercially available flying machine about the size of a card table with four helicopter rotors. Saxena and his team have already programmed quadrotors to navigate hallways and stairwells using 3-D cameras. But in the wild, these cameras aren't accurate enough at large distances to plan a route around obstacles. So, Saxena is building on methods he previously developed to turn a flat video camera image into a 3-D model of the environment using such cues as converging straight lines, the apparent size of familiar objects and what objects are in front of or behind each other -- the same cues humans unconsciously use to supplement their stereoscopic vision.

Graduate students Ian Lenz and Mevlana Gemici trained the robot with 3-D pictures of such obstacles as tree branches, poles, fences and buildings; the robot's computer learns the characteristics all the images have in common, such as color, shape, texture and context -- a branch, for example, is attached to a tree. The resulting set of rules for deciding what is an obstacle is burned into a chip before the robot flies. In flight the robot breaks the current 3-D image of its environment into small chunks based on obvious boundaries, decides which ones are obstacles and computes a path through them as close as possible to the route it has been told to follow, constantly making adjustments as the view changes. It was tested in 53 autonomous flights in obstacle-rich environments -- including Cornell's Arts Quad -- succeeding in 51 cases, failing twice because of winds. The results were presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Portugal Oct. 7-12.

Saxena plans to improve the robot's ability to respond to environment variations such as winds, and enable it to detect and avoid moving objects, like real birds; for testing purposes, he suggests having people throw tennis balls at the flying vehicle.

The project is supported by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Vegan MoFo 5.1: Tips for Spending More Time with Your Guests

We still have a few days of Vegan MoFo left, so I thought I?d finish out my month of recipes and tips for throwing the ultimate vegan party with some tips for making your holiday gatherings run as smoothly as possible.

Throwing the Ultimate Vegan Party

If you?ve ever hosted a party, you know that things can get hectic pretty quickly and before you know it the evening is over and you?ve barely spent any time socializing with your guests. I know that I?ve found myself in this situation ? either cooking and cleaning in the kitchen or mixing cocktails as guests arrive throughout the night, and barely having any time to talk with my friends and family.

Here are a few tips that I?ve picked up along the way that will help you spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your guests during your holiday parties.

Tip #1 ? Serve drinks that can be made in large quantities ahead of time. Things such as punches, bloody Mary?s, mimosas, and my whiskey spiked cider can be made in punch bowls or pitchers before your guests arrive and you can simply put them on ice or in a warmer and guests can refill their own cups all night long so you don?t get stuck playing bartender.

Whiskey Cider in Pumpkin

Tip #2 - Put together edible parting gifts. Before the party starts, create a party favor for your guests that doubles as a late-night snack. By putting this together beforehand you can avoid the late-night munchies requests from your guests, thus keeping you out of the kitchen at the end of the evening. These wrapped cookies are an adorable, functional, and easily customized option for any occasion.

Tip #3 - Use your slow cooker. Slow cookers are perfect for party food prep because not only are they one-pot meals with very little cleanup, but you can get the main course started well before your guests arrive and you won?t be stuck in the kitchen trying to prepare dinner just before serving time. Slow cookers are also handy when you go to a potluck or someone else?s holiday party ? this way you have less prep time and you can put everything together when it?s convenient for you. My vegetable soup is perfect for serving out of the slow cooker and you can tons more ideas from The Vegan Slow Cooker cookbook.

Slow Cooker Vegetable Soup

Tip #4 - Label everything. By adding cute labels to all of your dishes and drinks you?ll avoid having to spend time walking your guests through their dining options. You can either do this by labeling each dish individually with some sort of flag along with the ingredients list (for those with food allergens or preferences) or you can create a larger menu that you display next to the dining area. I love this DIY idea from The Kitchn.

Tip #5 - Have enough seating available. Ok ? so this one isn?t food or drink related, but you?d be surprised how much time party hosts can spend trying to find enough seating for their guests. If you have enough seating planned for ahead of time, you?ll ensure more time spent mingling and less time scrambling. Once you have your guest list confirmed, figure out how many people you?ll have in the house. Even if not everyone will be sitting at the same time, be sure to have a seat available for everyone plus a few extra in case of crashers. If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor holiday party, this hay bale seating is decorative, cost-effective, and easy.

__

I hope you find these tips useful and that you manage to find more time to spend with your guests at your next holiday party! I?ll be back tomorrow with some more tips and tricks!

Psilocybin for anxiety and depression in cancer | Psychology Today

A recent study of people with advanced-stage cancer found that a single dose of psilocybin led to lasting improvements in anxiety and depression. Psilocybin might enhance mood by shifting attention away from negative and towards positive emotional information. Mystical experiences occurring under the influence of psilocybin could help ease existential anxiety by changing a person?s attitudes towards death and dying. Although these results are promising, research studies in this area have not used adequate experimental controls and therefore these results should be considered tentative until more rigorous research has been conducted. ?

A pioneering study in the 1970s found that psychotherapy combined with the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD appeared to help to reduce depression, physical pain and anxiety about death in people with terminal cancer (Grof, Goodman, Richards, & Kurland, 1973). The authors? impression was that the patients who made the most dramatic changes were those who had a ?peak mystical experience? of oneness with the universe usually preceded by an experience of spiritual ?death and rebirth?. Profound experiences of this nature were seen in 25% of sessions. The authors argued that profound religious and spiritual experiences, such as a ?peak mystical experience? were particularly effective in helping patients accept death. However, they also noted that other kinds of emotional improvements frequently occurred even without the presence of a mystical experience.

This study was of an exploratory nature and due to the absence of any control group it is not possible to know whether the effects observed were specifically due to drug effects, the psychotherapy, or even placebo effects. In spite of these promising results, psychedelic drug research was effectively banned for decades when these substances were made illegal. In recent years there has been a revival of interest in this area. A 2011 study again examined the use of psychedelic drugs in people with advanced-stage cancer (Grob et al., 2011). This study used psilocybin rather than LSD because research suggests that the effects of psilocybin are more euphoric and less likely to produce panic or paranoid reactions than LSD. The drug produced no adverse medical effects and was well-tolerated.

The treatment appeared to have beneficial effects on depression and anxiety. Six months after taking psilocybin, the patients had a significant reduction in depression. What I found particularly interesting was that they also showed a reduction in trait anxiety that was significant at 1 and 3 months after treatment. Trait anxiety refers to how much anxiety a person generally feels and is usually considered a stable feature of one?s personality, closely related to a broader trait called neuroticism. The results of this study might seem to suggest that psilocybin could produce a lasting change in this feature of personality. As noted in a previous article, another study using healthy volunteers found that psilocybin produced lasting changes in the personality trait of openness to experience (MacLean, Johnson, & Griffiths, 2011). However, this study found no change in other personality traits, including neuroticism. It seems plausible that when people have advanced-stage cancer their ratings of their general levels of anxiety would be elevated compared to healthy people due to their illness. If this is the case, perhaps psilocybin helped reduce their heightened anxiety to more normal levels. However, without knowing the patients? levels of trait anxiety before their illness it is not possible to draw any definite conclusions.

Another limitation of this study, like the 1970s study cited earlier, is that there was no comparison group of patients who did not receive psilocybin to serve as an experimental control. For this reason, it is not possible to rule out the possibility that the beneficial effects observed were due to placebo effects. For example, the patients might have benefited simply from the care and attention they received from the researchers during the study. The authors of the study acknowledged this limitation and explained that they believed that it would have been unethical to withhold a potentially beneficial treatment from the terminally ill. One possible response to this is that the psilocybin treatment could have been compared to a more conventional treatment such as psychotherapy. If a single-dose of psilocybin could be shown to be as or even more beneficial than more costly and intensive treatment strategies such as psychotherapy then care of the terminally ill could be enriched.

In spite, of these limitations, the results remain suggestive. Studies with healthy volunteers have found that after a single dose of psilocybin, volunteers reported improvements in mood, attitudes to life and the self, positive behaviour changes including improved relationships, and increased spirituality, as well as increased satisfaction with life that persisted for months afterwards (Griffiths et al., 2011; Griffiths, Richards, McCann, & Jesse, 2006). Interestingly, Griffiths et al. (2011) found that volunteers reported increases in ?death transcendence?. That is, participants expressed an increased belief that there is continuity after death, e.g. belief that death is not an ending but a transition to something even greater than this life. It seems worth noting that all the participants in this study were involved in religious or spiritual activities prior to the study. Thus, they might have been especially receptive to the idea that ?spiritual? experiences induced by the drug could represent real insights into reality.

A forthcoming paper on the effects of psilocybin on attention provides insights into why psilocybin might have beneficial effects on mood and relieving depression (Kometer et al., 2012). People who are depressed show a bias towards paying more attention to negative than to positive stimuli. Depressed people find it harder to recognise happy facial expressions and respond more slowly to positive compared to negative words in emotional tasks. This emotional bias has been linked to problematic functioning in the serotonin system in the brain. Psilocybin and LSD produce their hallucinogenic effects by acting on the serotonin system, and Kometer et al.?s study found evidence that psilocybin can influence attentional biases in a positive way. In this study, volunteers under the influence of psilocybin experienced increased positive mood and took longer to recognise negative facial expression and to react to negative or neutral words compared to positive ones. Interestingly, these effects did not occur when participants had been administered a drug called ketanserin, which blocks serotonin receptors[1], before being given psilocybin. This suggests that psilocybin can induce biases of attention towards positive and away from negative emotional stimuli. Additionally, these effects appear to be due to the action of psilocybin on the serotonin system. If it is true that psilocybin treatment can be effective in reducing depression, these findings seem to suggest a plausible mechanism. This might explain why volunteers in the studies by Griffiths et al. reported persistent positive changes in their attitudes to many aspects of their lives.

The findings from these studies seem very promising. The research cited does seem to suggest that mystical experiences induced by psilocybin can help a person overcome the fear of death. Additionally, psilocybin seems to have a generally positive effect on mood and attitude that could alleviate depression. A limitation of the studies cited is that they did not use no-drug control groups for comparison to show that the effects were actually due to the drug rather than other factors such as placebo effects. Thus, it would be premature to definitely conclude that psilocybin is an effective treatment for depression and existential anxiety in people with cancer, even though the results seem very suggestive. More rigorous research designs are needed to provide more conclusive evidence. It would be useful to know if reductions in trait anxiety occur in people who were already high in this trait before developing cancer. Additionally, it would be interesting to examine whether psilocybin might help a person with cancer accept death if they do not have any religious or spiritual beliefs. ?

Nearly 250 Gather at UCLA to Discuss Economic Opportunity In ...

If ever there was doubt about the interest, desire and motivation to develop economically viable and sustainable farming solutions to repair a broken food system, it was allayed at the Seedstock Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Conference that took place at the UCLA Anderson School of Management on October 24. A diverse array of nearly 250 investors, farmers, entrepreneurs, distributors and researchers were on hand to hear from some of the most innovative thinkers, agripreneurs and practitioners in the growing sustainable ag marketplace.

The day began with an introduction by Jason Reed, founder of Seedstock, that emphasized the need to look for sustainable farming solutions that not only improve the environment and benefit local communities, but that also result in economically fruitful businesses. He was followed by a keynote from Colin Archipley of Archi?s Acres that touched upon the challenges that farmers face and will continue to face from constrained water resources. Archipley also impressed upon the audience that it is vital for the survival of your farm or business to insure that you are keeping tabs on the desires and demands of consumers in the marketplace.

The day continued with a panel on scaling sustainable agriculture solutions that examined the issues and challenges faced by commercial scale operations trying to grow and expand their sustainable-oriented businesses against a tide of outmoded regulations and government agencies fighting them every step of the way. The panel moderated by Jason Reed of Seedstock, featured Casey Houweling of Houweling?s Tomatoes, Dan Gibbs of Home Town Farms, Miguel Jardine of VermiSoks and Thaddeus Barsotti of Farm Fresh To You. A panel on urban agriculture moderated by Dan Allen of Farmscape followed with panelists Rachel Surls of UC Cooperative Extension, Jesse DuBois of Farmscape, Rickey Smith of Urban Green LA and David Rosenstein of EVO Farm delving into the fundamentals of why businesses and individuals should engage in urban agriculture.

A panel on sourcing sustainable agriculture followed that was moderated by Dwight Detter a Southern California forager for Whole Foods Market and featuring Martin Anenberg of FreshPoint, Don Nishiguchi and Erik Oberholtzer. The conversation turned toward how each company finds the farmers that it sources from and the standards that are applied to determine product suitability for the destined point of sale. The digital technology panel moderated by Danielle Gould of Food+Tech Connect followed with panelists Erika Block of Local Orbit, Melanie Cheng of FarmsReach, Jamie Kantrowitz of Shared Earth and John Bailey of Top 10 Produce. The panel touched on topics such as the ability of digital technology to provide small farmers with tools to increase traceability for their products and take advantage of turnkey software platforms to facilitate distribution and direct sales.

The day concluded with a panel on investment in sustainable ag moderated by Matthew DeBord of 89.3 KPCC in Southern California, which featured Paul Matteucci of U.S. Venture Partners, Adam Dell of Austin Ventures, Nicola Kerslake of NIREC and David Jeromin of Golden Mean Capital. The conversation looked at whether VCs will come around to investing in this sector and many of the panelists noted that if one successful investment and exit occurs, other VCs would follow like lemmings. The focus also fell to the lengthy time horizon of agriculture investments and how they might not fit the typical VC investment fund criterion.

The proceedings concluded with the agripreneur pitch competition moderated by Robert Puro of Seedstock and judged by Adam Dell of Austin Ventures, Nick Grouf, founder of Firefly Network and Spotrunner among others and Sam Earle of Local Food Systems, Inc. The pitching companies included Project Alba, a project to create an innovative and efficient Social Enterprise for sustainable economic development of rural areas in Southeast Asia; VermiSoks, a company creating a closed loop growing system that takes advantage of the vast amount of food waste generated worldwide; Freshr.com, a cloud-based and e-commerce marketplace for pairing buyers and sellers of fresh food; and Indoor Harvest, a developer of aeroponic growing systems. After convening, the judges announced that VermiSoks had won the competition with Project Alba coming in a close second.

And, if you weren?t able to make it, don?t fret; the entirety of the conference proceedings were recorded and will soon be available for your viewing pleasure.

See you at the next event!

Screen Shot 2012-10-27 at 1.23.43 AMWe've all been?inundated with political back and forth over the past few weeks. Curse you, social networks! And you too, Internet! And yet, what's really frustrating isn?t the political back and forth, but the content that is being volleyed back and forth. More specifically, the lack of content. Watch 9 seconds of any recent episode of the Daily Show and you?ll see that networks, pundits, experts, you-name-its are all happily willing to spend their days blowing an out-of-context sentence completely out of proportion and make said sentence seem like the biggest offense to politics since Watergate.

Don't Ignore these 5 Insights from 5 Big Online Entrepreneurs - Gestbiz

Don?t Ignore these 5 Insights from 5 Big Online Entrepreneurs

Posted on October 28th, 2012 by Reginald Bailly in Digital Notes

I?ve been lucky enough to have in-depth interviews with 20 of the world?s top online entrepreneurs.

Today, I?m sharing five really important and totally exclusive insights from five of these big online entrepreneurs.

What You?ll Learn:

  • The most important web design trend right now
  • How Matt Wolfe makes $ 20,000 per month
  • How much it costs to outsource a full-time virtual assistant
  • Why social media is like a party
  • The one thing that will never change about online business

#1 Responsive Web Design is the Future

When we asked Jacob Cass about the ?future of web design? he said, ?responsive design would be at the top of my list.?

What is Responsive Design

A website is ?responsive? when its design adapts automatically depending on what device the site is being viewed on. ?For example, a website will change its look when you?re viewing it on a mobile device, versus a large screen,? Cass explained.

Why Responsive Design is so Important

The Internet used to be just on computer monitors. Today, it?s being viewed more than ever on phones and tablets. A May 2012 study from comScore predicts that smart phone owners will become ?the new mobile majority in the US? by the end of the year (see chart).

More and more people around the world are browsing the web on small, mobile screens and if your website doesn?t look good on an iPhone or iPad then you?re losing ground with this rising wave of users.

The Insight:

If you?re a web developer, it?s time to learn how to create responsive websites.

If you?re a website owner, make sure your next redesign includes responsive design.

If you want more insight from Jacob Cass, you can check out his blog or get Income Diary?s book of interviews. Cass also identified ?HTML 5, CSS 3, web fonts and parallax scrolling? as hot web design trends on the rise.

#2 Membership Sites may be the Best Way to Make Money Online Today

Broadly, a membership site is a website that restricts access to most of its content to members only. Many membership sites are free to join, but others cost anywhere from $ 1 to $ 100 per month.

Why Membership Sites are so Profitable

Matt Wolfe made $ 1,615.63 in January 2012 from selling 12 different affiliate products. He made a little over $ 62 with Adsense. Between his two membership sites (The WordPress Classroom and The Marketer?s Classroom), Wolfe raked in about $ 20,000 in just one month:

The best thing about this type of revenue is that it tends to be recurring. As Ryan Lee explained to us, ?instead of always having to get new customers, your job becomes taking care of the customers that you already have.?

The Challenge of Creating a Membership Site

The biggest obstacle to success with a membership site is making your exclusive content incredibly valuable. As Wolfe explained to us, ?There?s a lot of information out there for free, so you?ve got to figure out what makes your information different.?

Once you?ve convinced people to pay monthly for access, then the challenge becomes continuing to provide value to your community of members so that they?re getting their money?s worth. That could be a full-time job ? but if you?re making $ 20,000 per month from subscriptions like Wolfe does, then you can justify the hard work.

The Insight:

While selling ad space and products are still perfectly viable ways of earning a passive income online, creating a members-only community is more lucrative right now. If you?re willing and able to provide massive, exclusive value to your members, your reward will be a fat, reliable monthly paycheck.

#3 Low Barriers to International Business mean Huge Opportunity

A couple decades ago, the idea of hiring a personal assistant who lived in another country was ridiculous. Today, the Internet has made it possible for a team of people to work on a project simultaneously from their computers while living anywhere.

In 2005, Tyrone Shum started a business selling Dragonboat paddles online. Business was almost too good and Shum was working 60 hours a week. After reading Timothy Ferriss, Shum started outsourcing and brought down his workload to just ten hours per week.

Shum has since sold his Dragonboat business and now spends his time teaching people how to outsource work effectively.

Why Outsourcing Works

Every business owner could use a bigger staff. But if you live in The United States (like me) or in The UK (like Michael), then a skilled full-time employee will no doubt cost over $ 10,000 per year.

Outsourcing works because it allows a business owner to hire a staff in a country where the cost of living is much lower.

How Much Does Outsourcing Cost?

?I think you?d be reasonably paying about $ 450 a month for a full-time virtual assistant working 40 hours a week. For part time, you?d be looking at $ 250-$ 300 a month. For contracts, I would probably say at least a minimum of $ 5 an hour nowadays?

Tyrone Shum, from Web Domination 20

Where to Hire

?Personally, I use people from the Philippines. For one, they?re English-speaking. Two, they?re honest and very high integrity. And three, they?ve got most of the technology that most of us use in the Western countries, so it wouldn?t be a problem to work with them.?

Tyrone Shum, from Web Domination 20

Obstacles with Outsourcing

If you?ve ever had a staff, then you know managing a team is a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, if you don?t do it right, outsourcing a personal assistant or a team may be more trouble than it?s worth.

Shum recommends talking to a potential employee ?face to face? via video call before hiring to get an idea of their character. Another important step in effective outsourcing is to develop efficient systems for managing and training your staff, which Shum details in his interview.

The Insight:

There?s nothing more valuable to a business than a dedicated employee. If your business could benefit from a staff (or a larger staff) but you don?t yet have the funds to pay someone locally, outsourcing offers an incredible opportunity.

#4 Social Media is a Party

We mostly talked with Pat Flynn about his hugely successful blog on earning passive income.

But Flynn is an expert on social media ? as testified by his 58,000+ Twitter followers and 26,000+ fans on Facebook? and he told us that social media is like a party.

What to Do on Social Media

?You want to approach social media like you?re at a big party. What do you do at a party? You get to know people. You get to understand who they are.?

Pat Flynn, from Web Domination 20

According to Pat, your goal on social media should be to develop a trusting relationship with your audience.

What not to Do on Social Media

Many people make the mistake of trying to use their social media pages as a platform for selling. That?s a big mistake.

?Selling to people through social media is like going to a party, meeting somebody for the first time, and then saying, ?Hey, do you want to buy this Tupperware???

Pat Flynn, from Web Domination 20

The Benefit of Seeing Social Media like a Party

Flynn says that ?Facebook and Twitter have been amazingly successful at bringing in returning traffic to my site.? He also mentioned the increased brand awareness that comes with being on a site that people are on ?all the time.?

But social media is even more valuable to Flynn as an ongoing social event, an interactive community: ?It?s great because I can post questions on there and people answer. It really brings a community feel to the brand and that?s a good thing about social media. If people have questions, other people can answer for me before I even have to go there. So that really helps a lot.?

The Insight:

Even businesses should keep social media social.

#5 Business will always be about Solving People?s Problems

Derek Halpern is one of the world?s foremost experts on the psychology of blogging. We interviewed him to find out more about his popular blog Social Triggers and how to benefit from understanding what makes people ?tick? online.

But one of my favorite parts of the interview came when Halpern wasn?t talking about psychology at all. He was discussing the way people often miss what really matters when it comes to running an online business.

The Shiny Object Problem

?Right now, we have an obsession with shiny objects. Everyone wants to talk about the latest tools, Pinterest, Facebook, and all this garbage. It always changes every six months. It drives me insane!?

Derek Halpern, from Web Domination 20

There?s always something new to talk about on the ever-changing web. New features, new software, new sources of traffic. All of these things matter, but by their very nature they tend to be short-lived.

It?s a good idea to pay attention to opportunities afforded by the latest trends, like how Josh Dunlop has capitalized on Pinterest?s popularity to grow his photography blog. But when keeping up with the latest trends becomes your priority, you?re foolishly ignoring what really matters.

The One Thing that Will Never Change about Online Business

?The only thing that doesn?t change is that you?re talking to people and that those people have problems that you need to solve.?

Derek Halpern, from Web Domination 20

Some people think that you can trick people into giving you money online. Others seem to think that money will just fall from the sky after they set up their website.

The truth is more difficult but also simpler and, I think, much better: ?people will give you money online when you solve their problems.

The Insight:

If you?re not making money online, then you?re probably not doing much to solve peoples? problems.

If you are making money online but you?d like to make more, then it?s time to start looking at how you can create systems and processes that solve those problems better and more efficiently.

?

One Last Insight

These five insights came from the first five interviews of Web Domination. There?s 20 interviews total, so we?re just scratching the surface here (this may become a series if well-received).

As I read through the book researching this post, I was again impressed by the advice these successful entrepreneurs were willing to share. They all seemed to share the attitude that they would be better off sharing their knowledge than keeping it all to themselves.

So that?s my last insight for today: when it comes to the secrets to your success, be an open book. There?s more to gain from helping others than from selfishly holding onto a strategy for yourself. If something in this article struck a nerve with you, please share it with your network and in the comments section below.

Top 10 Careers To Avoid ? Due To Projected Decline in Demand ...

The US Department of Labour has compiled some interesting data which should be of interest to school leavers, college/high school leavers and graduates who are looking to plan out their careers. This data maps out the 30 occupations with the largest projected employment decline between now and 2020.

I have listed out the top ten declining careers below and if you are currently participating in these career lines or are thinking about it, you should be aware that these jobs are in decline and perhaps these may be careers to avoid.

Occupation Forecast Decline in Jobs Demand
1. Postal Service mail sorters, processors, processing machine operators. -48.5%
2. Postal Service clerks -48.2%
3. Postmasters and mail superintendents -27.8%
4. Sewing machine operators -25.8
5. Switchboard operators -23.3%
6.Textile Knitting and Weaving Machine Setters, Operators and Tenders -18.2%
7.Semi-conductor processors -17.9%
8.Pre-press Technicians and workers, computer operatives -15.9%
9.Petrol Pump System Operators, Refinery Operators, and Gaugers -14.0%
10.Chemical Plant and System Operators -12.2%

Its clear that with the onset of email, cloud computing and smart-phones traditional mail is going to have to take a back seat and there is going to almost a halving of jobs in some parts of the mail service. So, you should think carefully before planning a career in the postal service and in major suppliers of the postal service as these may face some decline in demand too.

What was also quite noteworthy was the projected decline in demand for semi-conductor processor operators.(production staff). There is of course a continued decline in demand for PCs which could be driving this decline in demand for semi-conductors, but I am surprised this is not being offset by the corresponding increase in demand for smart-phones. But, clearly, be careful before planning a career in this sector.

(AP) ? Marcus Lattimore spoke to his South Carolina teammates from the heart on Friday night as they prepared to face Tennessee.

Don't take anything for granted, Lattimore urged the Gamecocks.

"Act like every play is your last play," defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said, recalling the junior tailback's words.

Now, those players hope Lattimore hasn't played his last game after a horrific knee injury that will likely end his season prematurely for a second straight year.

Coach Steve Spurrier gave few details on Lattimore's damaged right leg, which flopped to the turf like a rag doll's might after a hit in the second quarter of No. 17 South Carolina's 38-35 win over Tennessee on Saturday.

Spurrier said the injury appeared every bit as serious as the torn knee ligaments which caused Lattimore to miss the final six games last season. He required surgery and about six months of rehabilitation to make it back.

Lattimore was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"He's going to do wonderful things," the coach said, while acknowledging, "I don't know what field of life."

Connor Shaw threw for three touchdowns and a career-high 356 yards. He also ran for another as the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak. Lattimore had a 28-yard touchdown run, extending his school marks to 41 TDs overall and 38 rushing.

The Vols (3-5, 0-5) nearly rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the final quarter. Tyler Bray drove Tennessee to the Gamecocks' 19 with 1:08 to go before defensive end Jadeveon Clowney forced a fumble to end the series. Tennessee forced a punt and got a final chance, but Victor Hampton intercepted Bray's long pass attempt to seal the win.

The Gamecocks rolled up 510 yards after managing only 368 combined the previous two weeks in losses at LSU and Florida. Tight end Justice Cunningham had six catches for 108 yards and receiver Bruce Ellington had six catches for 101 yards as South Carolina won its third straight over Tennessee for the first time ever in a series that began in 1903.

Bray passed for 368 yards and four touchdowns, three to Zach Rogers.

The Gamecocks hoped to get their offense back on track and Lattimore was a huge part of that plan. He had been slowed by a hip bruise sustained at LSU two weeks ago, limiting him to just three carries in a 44-11 loss at Florida last Saturday. But Spurrier said he was at 100 percent and ready to once again carry the load for South Carolina.

And Lattimore was doing just that, gaining 65 yards in the opening half, including a 28-yard burst for his 41st career touchdown at South Carolina. Everything stopped at Williams-Brice Stadium when Lattimore lay on the turf after a 2-yard pickup right before halftime.

Lattimore was wrapped up from behind by linebacker Herman Lathers as defensive back Eric Gordon came in at the knees. Lattimore's body whipped around, his right leg slamming against the ground.

Trainers immediately rushed out to South Carolina's star, holding him against the ground as he tried to lift up and see what was going on. Lattimore appeared to be sobbing in pain.

After several minutes, Tennessee players came out to wish Lattimore well. South Carolina's players, coaches and staff soon followed and the group surrounded Lattimore as trainers lifted him onto the cart. The crowd chanted Lattimore's name as the cart pulled away, Lattimore's head covered with a towel heading toward the locker room.

"I don't know that I've ever seen anything like that," Spurrier said.

Messages of support filled Twitter from the sports world, including U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach, LSU coach Les Miles and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Spurrier was not surprised, saying Lattimore was loved and admired by many because of his work ethic and attitude.

"As a person, there is none better that I've ever met," the coach said.

A season ago, the Gamecocks relied on veteran Kenny Miles and first-year player Brandon Wilds to make up for Lattimore's absence a year ago. Miles filled in for Lattimore in the second half against the Vols, but Wilds has not played this season because of injury.

Freshman Mike Davis has played sparingly in seven games and should also see more playing time without Lattimore.

South Carolina looked in control most of the half, scoring on three of its first four possessions. Shaw threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to Bruce Ellington and 26 yards to Rory Anderson before Lattimore's TD run.

Tennessee cut the lead to 21-14 on Bray's 37-yard scoring throw to Zach Rogers, the duo's second TD pass of the half. But Shaw ended a 10-play drive on a 1-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left before the half to restore the Gamecocks' two-touchdown lead.

Bray and the Vols nearly pulled off the comeback down the stretch when Rogers hauled in a 22-yard pass in the end zone to bring Tennessee within a field goal. But Clowney's sack and Hampton's late pick saved things for South Carolina.

It's the third straight season Tennessee has opened 0-5 in the SEC.

"It's the same old song and dance on the SEC level," Dooley said. "We had a chance to win and they made a great play, got the ball out and turned it over. All you can is move on."

Spurrier hopes to do that, too, and hopes he can have Lattimore in his backfield as he has the past three seasons.

"Maybe he'll be back next year," Spurrier said. "Maybe it won't be quite as severe as it appeared on the field out there."

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Tens of millions of people in the eastern third of the U.S. in the path of the unprecedented freak storm had hours Sunday to prepare for the first raindrops that were expected later in the day, to be followed over the next few days by sheets of rain, high winds and even heavy snow.

The warning from officials to anyone who might be affected path was simple: Be prepared and get out of the way.

Hurricane Sandy was headed north from the Caribbean, where it left nearly five dozen dead, to meet a winter storm and a cold front, plus high tides from a full moon, and experts said the rare hybrid storm that results will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

"I've been here since 1997, and I never even put my barbecue grill away during a storm," Russ Linke said shortly before he and his wife left Ship Bottom on Saturday. "But I am taking this one seriously. They say it might hit here. That's about as serious as it can get."

He and his wife secured the patio furniture, packed the bicycles into the pickup truck, and headed off the island.

The danger was hardly limited to coastal areas. Forecasters were far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they were about winds. Rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, utility officials said, warning residents to prepare for several days at home without power.

States of emergency were declared from North Carolina, where steady rains were whipped by gusting winds Saturday night, to Connecticut. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

Officials were particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Sandy was at Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds, about 260 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and moving northeast at 10 mph as of 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. It was about 395 miles south of New York City.

The storm was expected to continue moving parallel to the Southeast coast most of the day and approach the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Monday night, before reaching southern New England later in the week.

The storm was so big, however, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"You never want to be too naive, but ultimately, it's not in our hands anyway," said Andrew Ferencsik, 31, as he purchased plywood and 2-by-4 lumber from a Home Depot in Lewes, Del.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was criticized for not interrupting a vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," said Christie, who declared a state of emergency Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in ways big and small.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the New York City's subways, buses and suburban trains. The city closed the subways before Hurricane Irene last year, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Amtrak began canceling train service Saturday night to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington and New York. Airlines started moving planes out of airports to avoid damage and adding Sunday flights out of New York and Washington in preparation for flight cancellations on Monday.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns.

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

In North Carolina's Outer Banks, a group of about 20 people was forced to wait out the storm on Portsmouth Island, a former fishing village that is now uninhabited and accessible only by private ferry.

"We tried to get off the island and the ferry service shut down on us," said Bill Rowley, 49, of Rocky Mount, N.C.

Rowley said he could see 15-foot seas breaking over the island's dunes, enough to bring water to the island's interior.

"We'll be inundated and it'll probably be worse tomorrow," he said.

In New Jersey, hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland. Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

The storm also forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He also canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard had a bit of advice for those in the path of the storm. Leonard and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger best-selling book of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."
