Alaska lawmaker apologizes for racial slur

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Don Young, the gruff Republican veteran who represents the entire state of Alaska, apologized Friday for referring to Hispanic migrant workers as "wetbacks" in a radio interview.

"I apologize for the insensitive term I used during an interview in Ketchikan, Alaska," Young said in a statement after lawmakers from both political parties called on him to apologize.

"There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words," Young said. "That word, and the negative attitudes that come with it, should be left in the 20th century, and I'm sorry that this has shifted our focus away from comprehensive immigration reform."

The 79-year-old Young, the second-most senior Republican in the House, issued a statement late Thursday seeking to explain his remark after using the derogatory term to describe the workers on his father's farm in central California, where he grew up.

Young, discussing the labor market during an interview with radio station KRBD in Ketchikan, said that on his father's ranch, "we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes." He said, "It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It's all done by machine."

"Wetbacks" often refers to Mexican migrants who have entered the country illegally, and Hispanics consider the word, which can be used to disparage all Hispanics, to be highly pejorative.

Young's explanation on Thursday wasn't good enough for lawmakers from either political party. His use of the word drew swift criticism from fellow Republicans working to temper the party's hardline positions on illegal immigrants and to improve GOP standing among Hispanic voters.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Young's remarks were "offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds." Boehner said he didn't care why Young said it; "there's no excuse, and it warrants an immediate apology."

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said the party offers a "beacon of hope" for those seeking liberty around the world and that Young's remarks "emphatically do not represent the beliefs of the Republican Party."

"Shame on Don Young," said Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas. "It is deeply disheartening that in 2013, we are forced to have a discussion about a member of Congress using such hateful words and racial slurs."

Arturo Carmona, executive director of Presente.org, an online Latino advocacy organization, said Young should resign.

In his statement on Thursday, Young said he had "used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in central California. I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays and I meant no disrespect."

He added that during the interview, he had "discussed the compassion and understanding I have for these workers and the hurdles they face in obtaining citizenship" and said the country must tackle the issue of immigration reform.

Among his jobs before entering politics were teaching school to indigenous Alaskans and working as a tugboat captain in the Yukon. Since entering Congress in 1973, Young has been known for his hot temper, his salty language and his independent streak.

As resources committee chairman in the late 1990s, he took on environmentalists and the Bill Clinton administration in pushing for oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and logging in Alaska national forests. He headed the transportation committee during much of the George W. Bush administration, during which he defied his own party's anti-tax positions by supporting an increase in the federal gas tax to help pay for bridge and highway construction.

It was under Young's chairmanship that the "bridge to nowhere," which was actually two proposed Alaska construction projects, became a symbol for questionable special projects inserted into spending bills.

He also is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which is looking into whether he failed to report gifts on his annual disclosure forms, misused campaign funds and lied to federal officials. The investigation comes from an earlier Justice Department probe into whether Young accepted gifts in return for political patronage. Young has said that Justice cleared him of those charges.

"I've been under a cloud all my life," he told reporters in Juneau Thursday. "It's sort of like living in Juneau. It rains on you all the time. You don't even notice it."

Young said he plans to run for re-election next year, saying he doesn't know anyone who can do a better job than he does in representing the state.

South Sudan military says 163 killed in clashes

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? A battle between South Sudan soldiers and rebels allegedly backed by neighboring Sudan killed 163 people, most of them rebels, government officials said Thursday.

South Sudan's military spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, said government forces also captured an airstrip in the town of Okello, which he claimed the rebels have been using to import most of their military supplies. Okello is in South Sudan's southeast Pibor County, where rebel leader David Yau Yau hails from.

"This airstrip has been used by Khartoum (Sudan) intelligence to transport and supply arms and ammunition to David Yau Yau. Some of the arms that were being dropped by Antanovs were captured, AK-47s. Some are broken, some are in good condition," Aguer said.

He said 143 rebels led by Yau Yau died in the battle Tuesday, and that 20 soldiers were killed and 70 wounded.

South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan in 2011 but is still dealing with violence inside its own borders. Military battles and fights between tribes kill dozens of people with alarming frequency. After decades of war with Sudan, the country is flooded with assault rifles.

Death tolls are almost impossible to verify without months of investigations, given how remote the country is and the complete lack of infrastructure. In late December 2011 and early January 2012, cattle raid attacks between tribes killed at least 600 people in Jonglei. A government disarmament campaign afterward collected more than 10,000 weapons.

Aguer said South Sudan's military will continue to "deal with the militia group" and that it would be a matter of time before Yau Yau's rebels are cleared from Pibor County.

South Sudan accuses Sudan of arming the rebellion to block South Sudan's plans to build an oil pipeline eastward through Ethiopia to a port in Djibouti.

A dispute with Sudan over oil transit fees led South Sudan to shut down its oil industry last year and look for alternative ways to transport its crude. The two governments recently reached an agreement that is supposed to restart South Sudanese exports through Sudan's oil pipelines.

Sudan has repeatedly denied having any ties to the rebels. It accuses South Sudan, in turn, of supporting rebels in Sudan's South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

Yau Yau first rebelled against South Sudan after he failed to win a parliamentary seat in the 2010 general elections. He accused the ruling party of rigging the vote. In 2011 he accepted an amnesty offer and was promoted to a general. But last year he fled to Sudan and started a rebellion in Pibor against South Sudan's government.

Pebble 1.9.1 firmware update arrives to resolve shutdown woes

Pebble update resolves shutdown woes

Some Pebble owners were understandably perturbed when their smartwatches seemingly went dead after a shutdown -- that's not the best first impression of an emerging technology. Some credit is due for a rapid turnaround, however, as the Pebble team just delivered a 1.9.1 firmware upgrade that should tackle the problem. It fixes a bug that occasionally prevented the microcontroller from reconfiguring itself before the watch went dark, leaving the buttons unresponsive on wake and the Pebble more of a paperweight. You'll still have to swap out for a replacement if your watch has already fallen ill and won't recover, but the experience should be more reliable for already functional watches from here on out. Let fellow owners know how well the upgrade worked in the comments.

[Thanks, Daniel]

North Korea says ready for combat as sanctions tighten

By Jack Kim and Ju-min Park

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea repeated threats on Tuesday to target U.S. military bases as Washington and its allies tightened economic sanctions against the isolated country by targeting Pyongyang's main foreign exchange bank with new measures.

The rhetoric from North Korea - which has threatened the United States with nuclear war and rehearsed drone attacks on South Korea - and Washington's hardening reaction, drew more concern from China, Pyongyang's only major ally, which said the situation was "sensitive".

Pyongyang says United Nations sanctions, agreed after North Korea carried out a third nuclear test in February, are part of a Washington-led plot to topple its leadership.

"From this moment, the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army will be putting into combat duty posture No. 1 all field artillery units, including long-range artillery units and strategic rocket units, that will target all enemy objects in U.S. invasionary bases on its mainland, Hawaii and Guam," the North's KCNA news agency said.

The order was issued in a statement from the North Korea's military "supreme command."

The Pentagon condemned North Korea's rhetoric, saying it was designed to "raise tensions and intimidate others."

"They need to stop threatening peace on the peninsula. That doesn't help anyone ... and we stand ready to respond to any contingency," Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters.

The Pentagon has declined to define the range of North Korea's rockets, saying it is classified. But Admiral James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged on March 15 that one type of North Korean missile likely had the range to reach the United States.

South Korea's defense ministry said it saw no sign of imminent military action by North Korea and most military analysts say Pyongyang will not risk a conflict with the United States that it would lose.

South Korea and the U.S. military are conducting military drills until the end of April, which they have stressed are strictly defensive in nature. The North accuses Washington of war preparations by using B-52 bombers which have flown over the Korean peninsula as part of the drills, and it has abrogated an armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

The Pentagon said there have been three such flights by U.S. B-52 bombers since March 8, with the most recent one on Monday.

BANK SANCTIONS?

Officials said Japan and Australia plan to sanction North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank as part of U.S.-led efforts targeting Pyongyang's funding for its nuclear program.

China again called on all parties to show restraint. "At present, the situation on the Korean peninsula remains complex and sensitive," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei.

Pyongyang's aggressive rhetoric appears to mark a further attempt to boost the military credentials of Kim Jong-un, who took power in December 2011 after the death of his father. He has cemented the role of the military and the North's nuclear weapons and missile ambitions with the nuclear test and two long-range rocket launches.

KCNA said on Tuesday that Kim had guided a landing operation by combined units including the North Korean navy.

"This is a mythmaking for the (military) commander," said Jeung Young-tae, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute of National Unification in Seoul.

South Korea marked the third anniversary on Tuesday of the sinking of a navy ship that killed 46 sailors that it and the United States have blamed on the North. Pyongyang denied the charge.

On March 22, South Korea and the United States signed a "counter-provocation plan" meant to fine tune joint reaction to any future North Korean military strikes. The Pentagon said details of the plan were classified.

Windy weather disappointing in New England?s home opener

Foxborough--Weather conditions were a big factor in a scoreless tie between Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution Saturday afternoon in Foxborough.

Chances were at a minimum in a game that only saw eight shots spread?among?both teams. With a strong wind gust at Gillette Stadium, moving the ball proved to be a difficult task for both sides, as there was no control of any ball played in the air.

Revolution head coach Jay Heaps found that tactics almost went out the window, given the conditions.

?I don?t want to make excuses but I will say this, the wind was definitely difficult to play in,? Heaps said. ?You can see the ball moving, you could feel it. I think if you go do heat maps, it?s going to be split down the middle and it?s going to be all away from where the benches were because the wind was just pulling everything over there.

"It was hard to switch fields when we needed to change the point of attack.?

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes had a gameplan heading into the weekend, but found out ahead of the game that his team would certainly be battling the elements.

?Coming in during the week we wanted to play,? Vermes said. ?When we saw the weather getting worse and yesterday having practiced here, it was pretty simple that it was going to be a difficult game based on which way the wind was going.?

The game was a homecoming of sorts for Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber, who played two seasons with the Revolution before being traded. Feilhaber held possession positively for spells in the first half but still found that the weather made play difficult for both teams.

?The wind really made the game impossible to play,? Feilhaber said. ?I think both teams realized that, so it was more like a field possession game.

"You just booted it down to one end and kind of pressed them. It wasn?t a pretty game by any means, but I think 0-0 is a fair result?

The lack of ball movement was further compounded by the high physical play all over the field, with 30 total fouls committed. Heaps singled out the resilant play of the Revolution back four was a big positive on an otherwise negative day.

?I think that, for me, Kansas City is one of the best teams at grinding out a game like that and I think that it showed a lot of our guys coming out and fighting them and making it a difficult battle,? Heaps exclaimed. ?I think our back four played well, but not just our back four, our entire midfield defended well. It?s one of those games where you want the three points.?

The Cool Communicator: Separating your personal and professional ...

Posted by TheSavvyGal.com on March 22, 2013 ? Leave a Comment?

By Holly W. Schwartztol, Ph.D ~

Women may encounter an overlap between their professional and personal roles. As a psychologist, I relate to this quandary. We seek to assist others with the very issues we, ourselves, confront.

It is simply uncanny how frequently clients come into therapy with whatever I may have been struggling with personally. This is a pretty common occurrence and not so very surprising, but it is something that is not shared between a psychologist and her client directly. For example, most of us have dealt with relationship difficulties, parenting problems, etc. at some point in our lives. This contributes to our being able to understand the complexities of our clients? problems and to have empathy with their plight.

My novel, What We Tell, explores the friendships between three female psychologists who struggle to find a balance between their loyalty to each other and their clients, as well as between their families and themselves. Dr. Ruth Trotter?s daughter, Margie, has been trying to conceive a child with no success. A new client comes in with the same problem asking for psychological help with her difficulty and Ruth is tempted to say,

?Oh, sure! My daughter can?t get pregnant either and I don?t have the foggiest idea what to tell her or you!?

Actually, Ruth does have a notion about how to help and wishes that her daughter would seek similar avenues of help.

As therapists, we don?t commiserate with clients as we would with our friends. We may share information about similar problems that we have successfully worked through, but we don?t burden our clients with our on-going problems. However, it may be that as we help our clients clarify and sort out their difficulties, we inadvertently find ourselves gaining better understanding of our own issues.

Of course, therapists try to mindfully separate their own problems from their work and to recognize when something is too close to home for the therapist to maintain objectivity. If that happens, the ethical therapist will seek supervision from a trusted colleague to avoid transference issues.

Raising children may also cloud our roles. When Ruth is empathizing with Margie?s fertility problems, Margie exclaims,

?Mother, don?t use that therapy tone with me! I am not one of your clients??

Ruth responds saying, ?I am not being a therapist, Margie. I am being a concerned mother. Why do you always accuse me of acting like a therapist??

?Look, Mother, I just called for some motherly comfort??

And, there is the dilemma. How does a mother who happens to be a therapist escape the accusation that she is acting like a therapist instead of a parent?

When she discusses this problem with her friend, Dr. Sylvia Woodberg, Ruth says,

?Maybe if I wasn?t a therapist, I could say whatever came into my mind with my kids?.We just weigh everything we say so carefully. Sometimes I wonder how it would be to have less insight and just blurt out whatever I was feeling. Maybe things would work out better.?

Are the characteristics of empathy, understanding and compassion uniquely owned by therapists?

Friendship, too, can be blurred by competing roles of the professional versus the personal. As therapists, our sensitivities can make us more vulnerable to perceived criticism from our friends. We may hope that our friends will be more sympathetic because they are therapists only to discover that because we are simply all human, we are susceptible to the same misunderstandings that non-therapists encounter. Thus, when our friends offer friendly advice about our parenting, for example, we may inwardly bristle.

Thus, life certainly is, as Edward Albee said, A Delicate Balance.

U.S. contractor charged with passing nuclear secrets to Chinese woman

By Tim Gaynor

(Reuters) - A U.S. defense contractor in Hawaii has been arrested on charges of passing national defense secrets, including classified information about nuclear weapons, to a Chinese woman with whom he was romantically involved, authorities said on Monday.

Benjamin Pierce Bishop, 59, a former U.S. Army officer who works as a civilian employee of a defense contractor at U.S. Pacific Command in Oahu was arrested on Friday and made his first appearance in federal court on Monday, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Hawaii said in a news release.

He is charged with one count of willfully communicating national defense information to a person not entitled to receive it, and one count of unlawfully retaining documents related to national defense. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, asked about the case at a daily news briefing in Beijing, said he did "not understand the relevant situation", and declined further comment.

China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, have long engaged in spying against each other.

Last year China arrested a Chinese state security official on suspicion of spying for the United States, sources said, a case both countries had kept quiet for several months as they strove to prevent a fresh crisis in relations.

That incident ranked as the most serious Sino-U.S. spying incident to be made public since 1985 when Yu Qiangsheng, an intelligence official, defected to the United States.

Yu told the Americans that a retired CIA analyst had been spying for China. The analyst killed himself in 1986 in a U.S. prison cell, days before he was due to be sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

"PERSON 1"

Bishop met the woman - a 27-year-old Chinese national identified as "Person 1" - in Hawaii during a conference on international military defense issues, according to the affidavit.

He had allegedly been involved in a romantic relationship since June 2011 with the woman, who was living in the United States on a visa, and had no security clearance.

From May of that year through December 2012, he allegedly passed national defense secrets to her on multiple occasions, including classified information about nuclear weapons and the planned deployment of U.S. strategic nuclear systems.

Other secrets included information on the United States' ability to detect foreign governments' low- and medium-range ballistic missiles, as well as information on the deployment of U.S. early warning radar systems in the Pacific Rim.

Bishop had top secret security clearance since July 2002. A court-authorized search of his home in November found around a dozen individual documents each with classification markings at the secret level, the affidavit said.

The case is being investigated by the FBI's Honolulu Division and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in coordination with U.S. Pacific Command and the U.S. Army.

Argentina blends devotion and marketing with pope

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- From slum chapels to Buenos Aires' imposing cathedral, Argentines celebrated their pope in Sunday Masses.

While the faithful prayed, vendors sold papal memorabilia and workers installed huge screens in the capital's central Plaza de Mayo in preparation for an all-night vigil ahead of Francis' formal installation ceremony, which will begin before dawn Tuesday Argentina time.

Mass in the slums began earlier and seemed more intimate. At the Villa 21-24, one of the capital city's most dangerous slums, many recalled how as an archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio blessed their tiny Caacupe Virgin of the Miracles chapel.

Not everyone could fit inside its yellow walls with painted saints and many stood outside. Blanca Franco, a 58-year-old housewife, listened and shed some tears.

"I have feelings in my heart that only God knows," Franco said. "I'm happy about the appointment of our archbishop."

Nearby, Marcos Manuel Solar, a 28-year-old former drug addict, smiled widely as he told passers-by that he had received the rite of confirmation from the pope himself. Solar, who works at a soup kitchen, said he kicked the habit through a rehab program funded by the church.

In the heart of Buenos Aires, the mood was festive.

Vendors outside the Cathedral sold pins, calendars and posters with the image of Francis. The flag of the Vatican City seemed to be the most popular sales item.

Uma Eiras, a 10-year-old student, waved a tiny one with its two white-and-gold vertical bands and said she would hang it in her room.

There seemed not to be a single pew empty inside the giant national Cathedral and many followed the Mass on large screens across the street.

Sabina Podrez, a 39-year-old scrivener, said she attended the Mass out of hope that Argentina and the world will change under a new pope.

"We were going to work disheartened, with insecurity," Podrez said. "This is a breath of fresh air."

NFL player among 2 injured in Florida air balloon crash

(CNN) -- Two people, including pro football player Donte Stallworth, were hospitalized Saturday after the hot air balloon they were riding in crashed into power lines in Miami, police said.

A third passenger in the balloon was not injured.

Police responded to calls at around 10 a.m. about the basket of the hot air balloon crashing into the power lines while airborne.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash with the help of Miami-Dade police, Detective Roy Rutland said.

Video from CNN affiliate WSVN showed the basket (where people stand) upright on a two-lane road, while the envelope (the balloon part) sat some distance nearby.

Stallworth suffered severe burns and is in stable condition at Miami's Kendall Regional Medical Center, said his attorney, Christopher Lyons.

The wide receiver was in the balloon with a female friend when the accident occurred, according to Lyons. The lawyer did not name the woman or detail her condition.

The third person was operating the balloon, according to local media reports.

The California native began his NFL career in 2002 with the New Orleans Saints and most recently played for the New England Patriots. His is currently a free agent.

Drew Rosenhaus, Stallworth's sports agent, said his client is "in good spirits."

"He was injured, but will be fine," said Rosenhaus, adding later that he hopes Stallworth is back playing "in a matter of weeks." "He will be able to resume his NFL career."

Beyond his on-field exploits -- from his time at the University of Tennessee to his years playing with the Saints, Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins -- Stallworth is known for hitting and killing a construction worker crossing a street in Miami in 2009.

Under a plea agreement, Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail for DUI manslaughter. He also reached an "amicable" settlement with the Reyes family, his lawyer, Lyons, said. The NFL also suspended him for one season.

Military deputies vow to build strong army - China News - SINA English

Military deputies to China's top legislature have vowed to build a strong army following top Chinese leader Xi Jinping's calls to that effect earlier in the week.

On March 11, Xi urged the country's armed forces to be "absolutely loyal" to the Communist Party of China, sharpen fighting capacity and abide by disciplines as he joined a plenary meeting of a delegation from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at the ongoing session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC).

Xi, the newly-elected state president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called on forces personnel to bring the country's defense and army building to new high.

"Xi's demand for the army to be at full military readiness to ensure victories in any wars shows his sense of crisis and strategic vision," said Chen Zhou, a national legislator and a researcher with the PLA's Academy of Military Sciences, on the sidelines of the parliamentary session.

The army can only avoid wars when it is capable of winning them, added Tan Weihong, an NPC deputy and a brigade commander from the Second Artillery Corps, China's strategic missile force.

The safety of China's energy resources, overseas assets, strategic maritime passages and overseas personnel is of great concern for China as the country is more open to the world, said Du Benyin, another NPC deputy and a political commissar of a navy submarine base.

The Chinese army and its soldiers should adapt to this new situation and make their due contribution, according to Du.

A consolidated national defense and a strong Chinese army will ensure the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and safeguard the world peace, said Chen Zhou.

China is the largest contributor of personnel to UN peace-keeping missions among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Since 2008, China has sent 14 batches of naval task forces to conduct escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia.

What to Do When You Can't Get Pregnant with Baby #2 | HRC Fertility

When a couple has a baby naturally, they tend to assume that they will have no problem having a sibling. Sometimes the status of a couple?s fertility changes after a successful pregnancy, however, and a couple that got pregnant accidentally with the first child might find themselves facing in vitro fertilization (IVF) for the second.

?

Secondary infertility is defined as a couple?s inability to get pregnant even though they have had at least one child previously. The diagnosis is frustrating emotionally. The most common causes are that the partners developed fertility problems after the last pregnancy, like endometriosis or irregular ovulation for the woman or decline in sperm counts and motility for the man.

?

Once the shock of the diagnosis wears off, the couple is faced with a difficult decision: Should we try to grow our family with infertility treatment or accept our family as it is?

?

Here are some things you can do when you can?t get pregnant with baby number 2:

  1. Get a fertility workup. It can seem odd to meet with a fertility specialist when you have children at home. Without a diagnosis, though, you can?t know what kind of treatment plan you would have ahead of you. Once you know what the problem is, your fertility specialist can give you a treatment plan.
  2. ?Explain the diagnosis to your friends and family. Secondary infertility isn?t talked about to the same extent as infertility is. As a result, couples suffering from the condition are not given the same emotional support from their family and friends because there is no perception of loss. The more they know, the better support they can be. Be sure to tell them how they can help, as they likely will want to lend a hand in any way they can.
  3. Discuss the diagnosis with your existing child. It?s naive to believe that you can hide the problem from your child by not talking about it. Children are perceptive when there is a problem at home, and with no information, they can draw the wrong conclusions about the source (i.e., they think it?s their fault). Discussing the problem and letting them see that you deal with challenges will be good for the family unit?s health overall.
  4. Take time to grieve. You are suffering a loss and processing a lot of emotions. Before you make any big decisions, allow yourself time to make your peace with the loss of your dreams of family the way you pictured it. Once you are at peace with the loss of this idea, you will be more receptive to new paths to the family you want.

?

Most causes of secondary infertility are treatable with assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Couples that have been trying for a year and are under 35 should talk to a specialist. Couples that are over 35 should talk to a specialist after trying for six months. Like infertility treatments, secondary infertility treatments are experiencing higher success rates today than at any time in history.

Secondary infertility is a difficult diagnosis for any couple wanting to have more children in their family. Some will content themselves with they family they have now. Others will get help from ART treatments so they can still have the family they always pictured for themselves. Whichever path they choose, these couples need to have empathy, validation and support to make the right decision for their family and themselves.

TCL LE40FHDE3000

TCL, which stands for The Creative Life, if you're interested,?is the fourth largest manufacturer of HDTVs in the world. Following LG, Samsung,?and Sony, TCL isn't very well known in the U.S. yet.? With more than 25 HDTV models available online through Best Buy, Amazon.com, and Walmart, and in brick-and-mortar retail chains like Sam's Club and BJ's, the Chinese-based electronics giant is looking to capture a piece of the American HDTV market and has opened a regional headquarters in Corona, California to support its campaign. We got our hands on an extremely inexpensive 40-inch LED backlit HDTV in the company's LEFHDE3000 line, which is short on features but big on value. The?LE40FHDE3000 ($359 list)?delivers good image detail and a bright picture, and it's the least expensive 40-inch HDTV to hit our Lab. Features are few and far between, and the panel suffers from a slight tinting issue, but this set is a still a very good deal if you're on a strict budget.

Design and Features
The LE40FHDE3000 doesn't look much different from the other sub-$500 HDTVs we've tested recently, which include the Editors' Choice RCA LED42C45RQ, the Insignia NS-42E480A13, and the Westinghouse UW40T2BW. It's a nice-looking set with thin 0.8-inch black top and side bezels, and a wider 1.5-inch bottom bezel. Measuring 3 inches deep, the cabinet isn't quite as thick as the RCA model (3.6 inches), but it's bulkier than the Insignia and Westinghouse sets, both of which are 2.3 inches thick.

The LE40FHDE3000 comes with a matte black rectangular stand that doesn't swivel, and you can hang the cabinet on a wall using the four VESA mounting holes and an optional mounting kit. All of the set's ports are at the rear of the cabinet facing right for convenient access. As with the RCA and Westinghouse models you only get two HDMI ports. You also get one USB port, a headphone jack, VGA (video) and PC audio inputs, a digital audio output, component and composite A/V inputs, and a coaxial antenna/cable jack. The LE40FHDE3000 lacks networking components and doesn't offer any Web or streaming services, but neither do the other under-$500 HDTVs we've tested. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find those features on a set in this price range.

The right side of the cabinet is also home to the Volume, Channel, Input, Menu, and Power buttons. These controls, with the exception of the Power button, are also used to navigate the on-screen settings menus. You can also use the included remote, an 8-inch wand with a glossy black finish and 37 well-spaced buttons. You get the usual number pad, four-way arrow keys, and player controls along with a dedicated picture preset button. None of the remote buttons are backlit.

Basic settings include six picture presets (Natural, Sports, Personal, Energy Star, Vibrant, and Cinematic) and Brightness, Contrast, and Sharpness adjustments. Backlight, Color, Tint, and Color Temperature settings can be found in the Expert menu, while the Advanced menu provides Noise Reduction, Dynamic Contrast, Scene Adaptive Brightness, and Ambient Light Sensor controls. When the light sensor is enabled, the backlighting level changes according to the current lighting environment.

Performance
After performing a basic darkroom calibration, the TCL LE40FHDE3000 delivered a peak brightness reading of 289.27 cd/m2 and a black level reading of 0.06 cd/m2, as measured by our Klein K10-A Colorimeter and using DisplayMate's HDTV diagnostic software and SpectraCal's CalMAN 5 calibration software. ?The resulting contrast ratio (CR) of 4,821:1 isn't exceptionally high, but it is the highest among the sub-$500 HDTVs we tested.

During testing, picture quality was sharp with fairly good shadow detail, but I noticed traces of red tinting, particularly in skin tones. While watching?2012 on Blu-ray, both John Cusack's and Amanda Peet's skin had a pinkish cast, but the tinting wasn't as noticeable as what we saw with the Westinghouse UW40T2BW. The panel's color accuracy is a little off, but not terrible. Reds are pretty close to where they need to be, as you can see on the CIE color chart below, but blues were a bit heavy, while greens miss the mark completely.

TCL LE40FHDE3000

The 60Hz panel had a little trouble with motion. There were signs of lag while watching a Knicks basketball game, but it was only noticeable when the action was very fast, and you had to be looking for it.? The Insignia NS-42E480A13's 120Hz panel, on the other hand, had no problem with the same content.? Viewing angle performance is decent but not stellar; colors are not as brilliant when viewed from the side, but the picture remains fairly bright.

The LE40FHDE3000 consumed 50 watts of power during testing, which is average for an LED backlit HDTV of this size. ?In comparison, the 40-inch Westinghouse UW40T2BW used 53 watts, the 42-inch RCA LED42C45RQ 67 watts, and the Insignia NS42E480A13 64 watts.

Conclusion
The TCL LE40FHDE3000 won't bowl you over with its feature set or image quality, but its $360 price tag is sure to appeal to the budget-conscious. Granted, it has some trouble with red tinting and its color accuracy is a bit off, but it delivers a sharp picture in 1080p and is relatively bright. If you can spend another $90, the RCA LED42C45RQ offers better overall picture quality and a bigger (42-inch) screen, which is why it remains our Editors' Choice for sub-$500 HDTVs.

Producers praise host killed in murder-suicide

AP

By Reuters

Producers of a popular cable program about hunting and guns said on Saturday they were saddened by the "sudden untimely death" of the show's host, Gregory Rodriguez, who police said was shot to death in Montana by a man who later apparently killed himself.

Authorities in the resort town of Whitefish in northwestern Montana said Rodriguez, 43, host of "A Rifleman's Journal" on the Sportsman Channel and contributing editor at Guns & Ammo magazine, was killed by the husband of a woman with whom Rodriguez was meeting on Thursday night.

The unidentified woman told police that her husband, Wayne Bengston, entered the house where she and Rodriguez were visiting and shot and killed him before brutally beating her, Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial said in a statement.

Bengston, 41, fled to a relative's house with the couple's 2-year-old son, who was later found unharmed. Authorities tracked Bengston to the couple's home in nearby West Glacier, where he was found dead early on Friday of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Dial said.

At a news conference on Friday, Dial said he did not believe Rodriguez was involved with Bengston's wife but that Bengston may have acted in a jealous rage.

The producers of Rodriguez's show said they were saddened by his "sudden untimely death."

"He truly epitomized Sportsman Channel's position of being a leader in the outdoors," Sportsman Channel spokeswoman Michelle Scheuermann said in a statement.

Rodriguez of Sugar Land, Texas, was an authority on firearms and hunting and owned an outfitting business that booked hunting trips to Africa.

He was a former vice president of the Houston Safari Club, a nonprofit group that advocates for wildlife conservation and sporting rights.

"A Rifleman's Journal" chronicled Rodriguez's global pursuit of big-game animals in Africa, Asia and Europe, according to the Sportsman Channel.

Rodriguez and his wife had two children, said the website of his Global Adventure Outfitters business.

Are tropical forests resilient to global warming?

Mar. 10, 2013 ? Tropical forests are less likely to lose biomass -- plants and plant material -- in response to greenhouse gas emissions over the twenty-first century than may previously have been thought, suggests a study published online this week in Nature Geoscience.

In the most comprehensive assessment yet of the risk of tropical forest dieback due to climate change, the results have important implications for the future evolution of tropical rainforests including the role they play in the global climate system and carbon cycle.

To remain effective, programmes such as the United Nation's Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation+ scheme require rainforest stability, in effect locking carbon within the trees.

The research team comprised climate scientists and tropical ecologists from the UK, USA, Australia and Brazil and was led by Dr Chris Huntingford from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in the UK.

Dr Huntingford and colleagues used computer simulations with 22 climate models to explore the response of tropical forests in the Americas, Africa and Asia to greenhouse-gas-induced climate change. They found loss of forest cover in only one model, and only in the Americas. The researchers found that the largest source of uncertainty in the projections to be differences in how plant physiological processes are represented, ahead of the choice of emission scenario and differences between various climate projections.

Although this work suggests that the risk of climate-induced damage to tropical forests will be relatively small, the paper does list where the considerable uncertainties remain in defining how ecosystems respond to global warming.

Lead author Dr Chris Huntingford, from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in the UK, said, "The big surprise in our analysis is that uncertainties in ecological models of the rainforest are significantly larger than uncertainties from differences in climate projections. Despite this we conclude that based on current knowledge of expected climate change and ecological response, there is evidence of forest resilience for the Americas (Amazonia and Central America), Africa and Asia."

Co-author Dr David Galbraith from the University of Leeds said, "This study highlights why we must improve our understanding of how tropical forests respond to increasing temperature and drought. Different vegetation models currently simulate remarkable variability in forest sensitivity to climate change. And while these new results suggest that tropical forests may be quite resilient to warming, it is important also to remember that other factors not included in this study, such as fire and deforestation, will also affect the carbon stored in tropical forests. Their impacts are also difficult to simulate. It is therefore critical that modelling studies are accompanied by further comprehensive forest observations."

Co-author Dr Lina Mercado from the University of Exeter and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology said, "Building on this study, one of the big challenges that remains is to include, in Earth system models, a full representation of thermal acclimation and adaptation of the rainforest to warming."

The research team came from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UK), National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA), The Australian National University (Australia), CCST/Inst Nacl Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) (Brazil), James Cook University (Australia), University of Leeds (UK), University of Oxford (UK), University of Exeter (UK), University of Sheffield (UK), Met Office Hadley Centre (UK), University College London (UK), and the University of Edinburgh, (UK).

ModernMix runs Windows 8 Metro apps in traditional desktop windows

Windows 8 is clearly a transition product. Microsoft is laying the groundwork for a more touch-friendly, mobile-oriented future. But it also isn't yet ready to throw out the familiar Windows desktop. The result is a dual nature ? and a recipe for confusion. A new tweak, however, aims to smooth this Windows 8 transition.

Simplicity restored

Stardock?s new app ModernMix brings some much-needed consistency to the bipolar Windows 8. By default, Windows 8 runs traditional Windows apps on the desktop, and Windows Store (formerly ?Metro UI?) apps in full-screen mode from the new start screen. After installing ModernMix, though, Windows treats Metro apps like Windows desktop apps.

This means Windows Store apps no longer have to run in full-screen. They can sit side-by-side with dekstop Windows apps. And like all desktop Windows apps, you can do things like resize them or pin them to the taskbar. ModernMix will remember those settings the next time you open the app.

ModernMix also adds a handy menu in the top-right corner of windowed Metro apps to let you quickly toggle between full-screen and desktop mode.

Why do we need this?

So why didn?t Microsoft include this functionality by default? Why must Windows 8 customers throw down US$5 (after a 30-day trial) to simplify things?

It's probably tied to the company?s vision for the future of PCs. Microsoft doesn?t want its OS to feel exactly like the Windows of old. If ModernMix's functionality was included in Windows, perhaps it would be too easy to dismiss the new part altogether.

Forcing some degree of the full-screen Metro environment on Windows customers also increases familiarity with the look of Windows Phone and Windows RT. This could potentially create a halo effect, making customers more comfortable buying devices on those (struggling) platforms.

Windows Store apps? modern UI may have a bright future, and that part of Windows 8 is much better-suited to multitouch. But, in the meantime, it creates a headache for countless desktop and laptop customers.

If you?re missing the days when everything revolved around the desktop, you can try a 30-day free trial of ModernMix at the source link below.

Phil Heath:Shout Out | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

A shout-out is a type of name-dropping where a list of names is spoken out expressly to direct attention at these groups or individuals, often as a means of expressing kudos or making a referral.Name-dropping is used to position oneself within a social hierarchy. It is often used to create a sense of superiority by raising one?s status.[citation needed] By implying (or directly asserting) a connection to people of high status, the name-dropper hopes to raise his or her own social status to a level closer to that of those whose names he or she has dropped, and thus elevate himself or herself above, or into, present company.Name-dropping can also be used to identify people with a common bond. By indicating the names of people one knows, one makes known his or her social circle, providing an opportunity for others with similar connections to relate. As a form of appeal to authority, name-dropping can be an important form of informal argumentation, as long as the name being dropped is of someone expert on the subject of the argument and that person?s views are accurately represented.

Charity Cruise To Benefit Veterans

Princess Cruises' Landmark Cruise Supporting U.S. Veterans to Feature Special Military Guests and Speakers

Cruise Line Designated as a Commemorative Partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration

WASHINGTON, March 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In benefit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront, Princess Cruises' first-ever charity cruise to support U.S. veterans will feature a number of special guests including former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen (Ret.); retired senior officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force; an award-winning war correspondent; and other respected speakers, authors and panelists.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110623/DC25541LOGO)

The voyage is expected to generate $1 million, split equally between the two charities.

Princess President and CEO Alan Buckelew, a Vietnam veteran himself, will be on board to host the cruise. He will be joined by special guests Admiral Mullen, former Army Chief of Staff General George Casey (Ret.), former Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz (Ret.), and former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead (Ret.), who will each host military branch gatherings throughout the voyage. The senior officers' wives, Deborah Mullen, Sheila Casey, Suzie Schwartz and Ellen Roughead will take part in a panel discussion centered on the lives of military families and the changing roles and challenges of spouses before, during and after deployment.

In addition, guest lecturers on the cruise will include:

  • Award-winning journalist and decorated combat correspondent Joe Galloway. He is one of America's premier war and foreign news reporters. A former military affairs consultant for Knight-Ridder newspapers and co-author of We Were Soldiers Once and Young, Galloway reported for UPI during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star for carrying wounded soldiers to safety during the 1965 Battle of la Drang. General Norman Schwarzkopf called Galloway "... the finest combat correspondent of our generation."
  • Speaker and veterans' advocate Justin Constantine. Constantine joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1998 after graduating from law school. He left active duty in 2004, but two years later, as a Marine Reservist, volunteered for deployment to Iraq. While on a routine patrol, he was seriously wounded ? shot in the head by a sniper. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a young Navy Corpsman and his own warrior spirit, Constantine is alive today and as a highly sought-after speaker and veteran's advocate, spreading a message of awareness, courage and resiliency.
  • The soldier who sent the message ending World War II in Europe, Gregory Melikian. As a young sergeant with the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces staff headquartered in France in 1945, Melikian was a telegraph operator under command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. At 3:30 p.m. on May 7, 1945, it was Melikian who was chosen to announce the unconditional surrender of Germany and the end of WWII in Europe.

Princess Cruises has been designated a commemorative partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, a national program conducted under the leadership of the Department of Defense to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The national program will include activities to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including those held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the U.S. and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.? Princess Cruises will conduct activities to recognize Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service, valor and sacrifice throughout the sailing. To learn more about the national commemorative program, visit http://www.vietnamwar50th.com.

"This cruise will be a great vacation for veterans and patriots who support our veterans," said Jim Knotts, CEO of Operation Homefront. "We'll be able to honor the service of the members of our military and their families, who sacrifice daily to secure the freedoms we all enjoy. And the specially-themed entertainment onboard will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

"This will be a wonderful time for military veterans and their families to enjoy some education, rest and relaxation," said Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Founder and President Jan C. Scruggs.

The Western Caribbean cruise will sail November 5-9, 2013 roundtrip from Houston aboard Caribbean Princess, with a call at Progreso, Mexico. The four-day cruise will offer passengers the opportunity to honor those who have served in the military as well as active duty military personnel. In addition to the line-up of incredible military guests and speakers, there will be special performers, celebrities, unique topic panels and a military film festival. Princess will custom-design onboard activities such as a Stars and Stripes Sailaway, a military themed show, a Red, White and Blue Gala, game shows, trivia quizzes and more ? to celebrate US veterans.

Cruise fares range from $549 to $1,649 per person based on double occupancy. A portion of each passenger's cruise fare totaling approximately $500,000 will be matched by Princess Cruises for a total of $1 million earmarked for the two veterans' organizations to share equally. As part of Princess' ongoing Military Cruise Benefit Program, active and retired military personnel choosing to book this cruise will receive a $50 onboard credit.

The cruise launches Princess Cruises' new "Cruising for a Cause" initiative where the company will dedicate entire sailings to support select charitable causes. This new, industry-leading program will provide the line's passengers, many of whom are looking for opportunities to make positive contributions to their communities and the world, a way to make a difference even as they vacation.
