Lance Armstrong's lawyer has fired off an angry letter to TV bosses behind a news report which alleged the retired cycling champion used performance-enhancing drugs ahead of the Tour de France over a decade ago.
On Sunday, U.S. TV news show 60 Minutes aired an interview with Armstrong's former cycling teammate Tyler Hamilton, who claimed to have seen the sportsman using endurance-boosting drug Epo.
Armstrong, who has been dogged by various doping scandals throughout his career, took to his Twitter.com page to deny the latest round of allegations, writing: "Never a failed (drug) test. I rest my case."
His attorney has now fiercely criticised chiefs at U.S. network CBS for their "unpardonable zeal to smear" Armstrong.
A statement from lawyer Mark Fabiani reads: "CBS' reporting on this subject has been replete with broken promises, false assurances and selective reliance on witnesses upon whom no reputable journalist would rely. This latest alleged revelation is no more reliable than CBS' earlier claims."
Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times, retired from cycling earlier this year.
