Mississippi Tops Automotive Misery Index

FOSTER CITY, California ? Driving can be a pain in the wallet, particularly if you live in Mississippi, according to a cost analysis of driving a 2012 Honda Accord EX in each state by CarInsurance.com.

The "Automotive Misery Index" shows the costs of gas and insurance vary dramatically across the country, with drivers in some states paying $2,000 a year more to keep a car on the road.

The Misery Index weighs each state's household income from the U.S. Census against the cost of gas, number of miles driven and price of full coverage for a 2012 Honda Accord EX.

Mississippi took top honors for the state where automotive expenses consumed the highest percentage of household income, with gas and insurance reaching $4,287 or 11.6 percent of their household income.

"A new Honda Accord costs pretty much the same in Bakersfield or Biloxi," said CarInsurance.com Managing Editor Des Toups, in a statement. "But keeping it on the road will hurt a lot more in Mississippi."

Oklahoma, Louisiana, West Virginia and Montana rounded out the top five list of highest, with Georgia, Michigan, Wyoming, Kentucky and Arkansas completing the top 10.

The least expensive to drive in is New Hampshire. Only $2,932 or 4.4 percent of New Hampshire's household income keeps the Accord on the road. It's followed closely by Alaska at $2,765 for gas and insurance, which makes up 4.6 percent of household income.
