Body piercing ? a painful art

Ear piercingBody piercing is a form of body modification and is a practice thousands of years old. Piercing is making a hole the skin with a needle and the insertion of ?jewelry (hence the name: to pierce = to bear ring = ring). In ancient cultures piercings were used by certain civilizations to symbolize a person?s status, culture and material welfare, but were also considered forms of body makeover. Even in the Bible the meanings of piercings are explained.

In societies of ancient Egypt, ear piercings or other body parts were considered symbols of favorable material circumstances but also a symbol of beauty. In some cases only certain people could make a body piercing, and only the pharaoh could make a belly button piercing.

In ancient Rome, men used to do piercings in their nipples because they symbolized power, but also honor and loyalty to the empire.

Aztecs and Native Americans used this type of body modification in religious rituals, and most of the times were making piercings in tongue, considering that so they got closer to god. Fighters had, often, nose piercings, regarded as a symbol of power, but also provided a more frightening attitude.

In South America piercings were used to beautify body, the most popular being those in the lip.

During the Renaissance piercings started to become increasingly popular among the wealthy. Wealthy women used to wear piercings in nipples and sailors believed that having a piercing in one ear would make them more successful at sea.

With time the symbolism of piercings was lost, in recent years becoming a fashion among teenagers. Young people adopt different styles, and sometimes they make such body modifications in order to integrate into a certain group.

Types of body piercing

1. Ear piercings are the most popular, especially in the lobe. But the ones made in the cartilage began to be appreciated, too. Ear lobe piercings are very easy to do and, if properly managed, do not raise any problem.

2. Septum piercing is, as painful as it is popular especially among males. They are difficult to make and have a healing period of 6-8 weeks.

3. Nose piercing (in one of the nostrils) is also very popular because it is easy to make and requires no special care.

4. Lip piercing is also very popular, both among female and male. Not very difficult but requires care because they can cause infections. This type of body piercing can be performed both in the lower lip and in the upper one. Monroe piercings are famous, made in such way to imitate Marilyn Monroe?s attractive mole.

5. Tongue piercings are painful and very difficult, so it is best to be made by an experienced person. Their care needs special attention because they can become infected very quickly. Healing time is not long, approximate 5 weeks, because saliva contains substances able to fight bacteria. Tongue piercings can affect oral health, but also teeth because the ring from the tongue can strike and thus break the teeth.

6. Eyebrow piercing is appreciated by young people. It is not very painful but it should be cared very carefully to prevent infection. The person who chooses such a body piercing must be careful because it can very easily hook a pillow or clothing.

7. The belly piercing is popular among females, being recommended to persons with flat abdomen. ?It has to be carefully looked after, because it can quickly get infected. People who have such piercing must take care not to catch them in clothing.

8. Genital piercings, both among women as among men are difficult and Piercingrequire special care.

Tips for proper care of piercings

1. Rinse the area with saline solution, because it has the ability to remove bacteria and lead to faster healing. This solution is additional, besides water and soap. The area should be cleaned carefully in the morning and evening.

2. The area where the piercing is located should dry by dabbing, always with a clean towel or cotton swab.

3. For oral piercings, the owner should avoid playing with rings, because they may cause infections. Oral hygiene is very important. Those who have such piercings should rinse their mouth every time after they eat, preferably with mouthwash. If you are smoker, during the healing it would be wise to avoid smoking.

If not properly looked after, piercings become infected, being a real health risk factor. So before you make a piercing you should think about the responsibilities that are involved, and not least you should choose a special place to get them.
