Cyclists muscled their way to a record take for cancer research this weekend in the BC Cancer Foundation's third annual cycling fundraiser.
Nearly 2,900 riders raised a collective $11.1 million in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. The foundation intends to invest the cash in research aimed at improving outcomes for cancer patients.
"The funds we have raised will have a significant impact on cancer patients and their families throughout the province and will help bring us closer to achieving our vision of a world free from cancer,? said Douglas Nelson, president of the BC Cancer Foundation, in a press release.
The two day, 200 kilometre ride started Saturday morning in Vancouver and ended around midday Sunday in Redmond, WA.
Dr. Paul Sorensen is a scientist with the BC Cancer Agency who rode during the fundraiser.
?I feel honoured to ride alongside these inspiring and committed people," he said in a press release. "Their hard work to raise funds makes a huge impact in my research of childhood cancers ? their support will make it possible to improve and extend the lives of our youngest cancer patients.?
Registration is already open for next year's ride, scheduled for June 16-17, 2012.
