Since When Is Being Patriotic Racist?

COMMENTARY | I am absolutely appalled a high school basketball team would be called out for a "U.S.A." chant. Being patriotic is not being insensitive. In fact, America needs more patriots, but apparently, some folks in Texas don't agree. As reported by KENS5 in San Antonio, Alamo Heights High School students have had a complaint filed against them for chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A."

The problem, according to San Antonio Independent School District athletic director Gil Garza, apparently stems from the fact that the Alamo Heights High School students are predominantly white while the Edison students are predominantly minorities. The chant was stopped almost as soon as it started by Alamo Heights coach Andrew Brewer, and the incident should have ended there. High school students are rambunctious and teachers are not mind-readers. Of course, the students may simply have been as tired of the anti-American propaganda as I am.

While the chant may have been insensitive, it is sending a deeper message to those high school students and to Americans. Being American is racist.

Being proud to be an American is not racist. We should be proud to be Americans, and if the students on the Edison team are not Americans, they should strive to become Americans. There is a reason we have immigrants and illegal aliens in the U.S. The U.S. is a great place to live, and Americans and soon to be Americans should be proud of this country.

In another article by KENS5, the Alamo Heights Superintendent Dr. Kevin Brown said, "We live in the best country in the world, and cheering for our country should be celebrated. However, cheering for our country should be done for patriotic reasons, not to offend other Americans."

I agree with the first half of that statement, not the second. Americans would not be offended by that chant. If everyone on both those teams were American, everyone would be wondering why that chant was being chanted. After all, if everyone is American, the chant is a chant for both teams and a show of U.S.A pride. On the other hand, non-Americans who wish to be Americans and aren't filling out the paperwork to become Americans would be offended by that chant.

Though, since this was between two sports teams, I would imagine that even if Alamo Heights chanted "Alamo Heights," the Edison team would have been offended because they're not part of Alamo Heights or the winning team, but that's part of sports. If the team you're on isn't winning, you work harder to become a winning team.

It's the same thing with being a U.S. citizen. If you aren't a U.S. citizen and you wish to become a citizen, you take steps to become a citizen. Americans work for what they have. Life is not easy here. It is simply easier.
